I appreciate hearing from you on this matter.</span> <br class=""><br class=""><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">As you may know,</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">the Intelligence Community, </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">made up</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">of seventeen U.S. intelligence agencies including the CIA and FBI, released a statement in October 2016 expressing confidence that senior officials in the Russian government directed the cyberattacks on </span>both private citizens and<span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> several U.S. political organizations, as well as</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">the subsequent disclosure of emails to the site WikiLeaks, with the intent to interfere with the 2016 U.S. election.</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">Since then, the Select Committees on Intelligence in both the House and Senate have commenced investigations into a much broader range of topics relating to Russian involvement in our election, including determining whether President Trump's campaign was in contact with the Russian government. Additionally, former FBI Director James Comey has confirmed that his agency is investigating any connections between Russia and President Trump's staff and associates.</span></p><p style="margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;" class=""><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">While the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 election is a necessary first step</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">, this will be an ongoing effort that involves sensitive and classified information. I will continue to work to fully understand — and </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">make public — the scope of foreign intervention in our electoral process, as well as any ties between the Russian government and the Trump campaign and White House. For example, there remain many unanswered questions regarding</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">former National Security Adviser to the President of the United States Michael Flynn, who had unexplained contacts with the Russian government and received undisclosed payments from Russian companies. Similarly, I remain very concerned by the ill-handled investigation formerly led by Congressman Devin Nunes, the</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">Chairman of the</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, who was also a member of President Trump's transition team.</span><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class=""> </span></p><p style="margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;" class=""><span style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);" class="">To ensure that this investigation is not hampered by partisan interference, I am a cosponsor of the Protecting Our Democracy Act to establish a National Commission on Foreign Interference in the 2016 Election.
