Our guests will be State Senator Noreen Evans, and Caryl Hart, a California State Parks Commissioner, who was recently appointed as the Director of the Sonoma County Regional Parks. We hope to be joined in the studio by Kathy Bailey of Save Hendy Woods. We also hope to be joined in the studio by a representative from the Mendocino Area Parks Association.<br><br>Although Californians are pleased to hear the Governor Brown's recent comments indicating he agrees that the $54 million of "secret" park funds that somehow eluded audit should be used for the purposes for which they were intended - to support state parks, state government has a lot more work to do to restore public trust and confidence.Our elected officials must ensure that these park funds go to support parks at risk of closure, and to bolster the generosity of the donors, nonprofits, and grassroots community organizations, who have all stepped up in a big way to save our parks during the last year. <br><br>The devil is in the details, of course -- the details of how best to leverage the generosity and community effort of the last months. <br><br>Assemblymember Jared Huffman, Chair of the Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife, recently tried to answer that question. About leveraging that generosity and community effort, he said, "Options include providing some kind of state match for major contributions from donors and nonprofits in support of parks at risk of closure or significant service reductions. We know the state also has some critical deferred maintenance needs in parks where public safety is an issue. <br><br>Huffman continued, "The Governor is correct that these one-time funds alone are not enough to close the large funding gap that exists for state parks, but they will certainly help. Parks definitely need the continued support and involvement of the public and local communities. We also should ensure that we have the accounting systems, transparency, and checks and balances in place at the state level to ensure this can't happen again. That's why I've joined my colleagues in calling for an independent state audit."<br><br>Meanwhile, Senator Evans's office tells us, "The Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) has a hearing on state parks is Wednesday, August 8, so we should be more fodder on the topic of audits. Also, Senator Evans may be working on a bill to introduce this session that would give more oversight authority to the Parks Commission."<br><br>Our broadcast is heard at 88.1, 90.7, and 91.5 FM.
