California Department of Parks and Recration (DPR) is going through the
permit process to install self-pay parking stations at seven State
Parks locations in Mendocino County.<br> <br> Approval for pay station signs for the Mendocino Headlands was sought at the July 2 meeting of the Mendoci<span class="text_exposed_show">no Historical Review Board.<br> <br>
Chair Joe Odegard asked if the iron ranger could be made out of
something other than steel it is currently constructed from, but once it
was discovered the steel post was already installed, the discussion
shifted to potentially covering it in wood to soften the look.<br> <br> A member from the public asked if they just park to see the sunset, would they have to pay?<br> <br>
Sector Superintendent Loren Rex said yes, but the fee is for use of the
parking lot, if someone walks in or rides their bike there will be no
fee.<br> <br> "I believe one of the only ways we are going to keep the
State Park system is getting people to pay to support the system," said
one lady in the crowd who stated she works for State Parks. "It is
incumbent of us who enjoy the State Parks to help pay for it. I think we
have some of the most beautiful parks in the state."<br> <br> Board member Beth Perrell said she could not support approval of the posts and signs as they are.<br> <br> "I feel very strongly that the proposed work is not in harmony and character in town," Perrell said.<br> <br>
The permit was continued to August's meeting with the request that Rex
come back with graphics of the proposed signs in place and with proposed
skirting material for the iron ranger post.<br> <br> Eleven new pay stations<br> <br>
¥ Three at MacKerricher: The parking area just north of Pudding Creek
Trestle, called Silvergate parking lot, Laguna Point and Lake Cleone
parking lots. Ward Avenue and Pudding Creek Trestle (just south of the
trestle) parking will remain free.<br> <br> ¥ Jug Handle State Nature Reserve parking<br> <br> ¥ The three lots at the Mendocino Headlands<br> <br> ¥ Big River Beach parking<br> <br> ¥ Van Damme Beach parking<br> <br> ¥ Greenwood Beach parking<br> <br> ¥ And Montgomery Woods parking<br> <br> As the fee stations are going through the review process, a fee has not yet been established.<br> <br> Day use fees at other parks is $8.<br> <br>
There is also a self-pay station at Manchester Beach parking, at Kinney
Road, and at Navarro Beach; neither have been implemented yet.<br> <br>
Two self-pay stations have been installed at the upper parking lot at
Point Cabrillo Historic Lighthouse, but after discussing with the Point
Cabrillo Light Keepers Association, which receives most of its funding
to operate the park from donations, State Parks decided to hold off
