Welcome to 2019! At American Promise, we’re ready to build on the huge successes of last year with a strategic plan focused on building support for the 28th Amendment across the nation—with citizens, in state capitals, and in Washington, D.C.
We ended 2018 on a high note thanks to bipartisan support of democracy reforms in the midterm elections and our passionate, rapidly expanding network of volunteers and contributors. The American Promise 2019 Roadmap to Success offers a look at our plans for this year. Here are a few highlights.
* Growing our team of engaged citizens: Citizen leadership is the key to our success. Last year our citizen leaders launched more than a <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=df03f011ef&e=9ea5be06a6> dozen new American Promise Association chapters, held dozens of meetings with elected representatives, met with hundreds of their fellow community members, and collected thousands of signatures. This year we have even bigger ambitions— <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=436128514e&e=9ea5be06a6> learn about the many ways you can get involved.
* Building support in Congress: With 27 newly elected American Promise Candidate Pledge signers being sworn in this month, the 28th Amendment now has 151 co-sponsors in the House and 45 co-sponsors in the Senate. We want to expand those totals to 240 and 50 by 2020, ensuring our <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=7b3f4837a6&e=9ea5be06a6> cross-partisan support grows and making the 28th Amendment a priority in Congress.
* Promoting statewide initiatives: By focusing on state-based resolutions and initiatives, we aim to head into 2020 with <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=34df71476d&e=9ea5be06a6> 28th Amendment endorsement in at least 22 states.
We have a lot to look forward to in 2019, and we’re so grateful to have you with us. Thank you for standing with us, and thank you in advance for your work to continue our successes in the coming year!

As state legislatures across the country start their sessions this month, elected officials who signed the American Promise Pledge will work for the 28th Amendment. These officials include Mary Jo Daley, recently sworn in for her fourth term in the Pennsylvania Legislature. Daley and other pledge signers will help us get big money out of politics. Want to see your representatives on the list? Reach out with the pledge below!
ASK YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS: “HAVE YOU SIGNED THE PLEDGE?”
Make a difference in 3 steps
1) Download and print the pledge.
2) Ask a candidate/incumbent elected official to sign it.
3) Return the signed form to American Promise.

| What We’re Tracking This Week
>From NPR: High voter turnout for the 2018 midterms may be a sign of things to come this year, as democratic engagement increases among people across the United States. More than 110 million Americans voted in November, thanks in part to early voting and competitive races in some states and districts. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=b37b70c873&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.
>From End Citizens United: As the 116th Congress convenes, Democratic leaders in the U.S. House appear likely to address the government shutdown before they move on to their promised action on government and election reform. Before the 2018 midterm election, a coalition of 107 Democratic U.S. House challengers called for reform legislation to be the first item on the agenda. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=d0285eb221&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.
>From the South Florida Sun Sentinel: In an opinion piece, Sam Daley-Harris suggests making a New Year’s resolution to join an organization like American Promise “that really empowers its members.” Daley-Harris writes: “Empowerment clue: American Promise volunteers had 17 meetings with Congress or their staff in 2017, the year their first chapters were launched, and 138 meetings in 2018. Most of their volunteers didn’t even know the name of their member of Congress before they joined the organization.” <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=66f17ba2d5&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.
>From The Hill: In the midterm elections, support for democracy reform—making our system of government more representative and responsive—was overwhelming and bipartisan. Voters approved redistricting reform in four states, increased voting access in four, and measures addressing ethics and money in politics in six states and more than a dozen localities, all by large margins. Democratic leadership in the U.S. House promised to take up a comprehensive democracy reform package “in the very first days” of the new Congress. As the midterm results made clear, voters will demand that they make good on their promise. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=9216e5cb5b&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.
>From Issue One: The Congressional Reformers Caucus, dedicated to political reform ideas and legislation, now includes 32 members of Congress: 16 Republicans and 16 Democrats. The caucus aims to address the roots of dysfunction in Congress and the current political system and is co-chaired by two members from each party. Members of Congress who are part of the caucus have shown their leadership on these issues by supporting bipartisan legislation to address the dysfunctional Federal Election Commission and combat the national security concerns around paid political advertising campaigns. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=3d35ec62dc&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.
