It is with much gratitude that we can announce that after holding a public rally and pleading with our city council at their last two meetings, that they have delivered a strong message to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission about the "serious near miss" at the San Onofre nuclear waste site.

and send a message of appreciation to Councilman,

for being an outstanding steward of public safety.

Why should you participate?

In a recent communication with David Lochbaum, nuclear expert at Union of Concerned Scientists, he put it this way...

I am not looking forward to the NRC's exit or report. They are not a factor in spent fuel storage safety.

The community has played a larger role. Recall that the recent episode was secret until a worker revealed it during a CEP meeting. Most plants lack a CEP. Had these same events happened somewhere other than San Onofre, no one likely would have heard about them. It is the community's activity rather than the NRC's inactivity that is really driving SCE and Holtec to figure out what's going wrong
and fix it.

I sometimes write and say that NRC really stands for Nielsen Ratings Commission. When public outcry keeps a spotlight on a plant, that light enables the many NRC staffers wanting to do right to do right. Bad things happen in darkness.

So, the community asking questions and compelling SCE to explain what the problems were and why the solutions will avoid repeats is the best way to ensure safety and help the NRC be a nuclear RoboCop rather than a Sgt. Schultz.

Thanks,
Dave Lochbaum

Seems to me that
WE
are the ones we've been waiting for,
so let's get on with it!
