> The Golden Rule and her intrepid crew will sail out of San Diego on Monday, October 15 (weather permitting), on her way to Hawaii, a three-to-four week crossing. The captain will be Bill Ethell, who was also captain of the anti-nuclear sailboat Pacific Peacemaker in the 1980s. The first mate will be Ian Gaillard, who crewed with Bill on the Pacific Peacemaker. Both Bill and Ian are avid cruising sailors from Australia. Also aboard is Steve Buck, from Eureka, California, who has been our recent skipper on the California coast. Steve is a Navy veteran and member of Veterans For Peace. He is also a fisherman, a sailboat racer, and a nuclear engineer who has overseen the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. Helen Jaccard, the Golden Rule’s project manager and crew member for the past three years will round out the crew.
> Preparations for the Pacific crossing are on schedule. In Eureka we put hundreds of new screws into the hull, added huge stainless steel plates on the keel, improved the rudder and made major improvements to the rigging. 
> In San Diego, we have purchased and installed a FleetOne Satellite Internet system and a Monitor wind vane self-steering system. Thank you SO MUCH, Alan Samuel for donating the FleetOne system so we can communicate with our supporters while we’re in the Pacific Ocean! And thanks so much to all who have donated funds and energies and love to the Veterans For Peace Golden Rule Project.
> While in Hawaii, we will visit people – including Native Hawaiians – who are affected by militarization and contamination on the islands, including from a bombing range where depleted uranium has been used and continues to be blasted into the atmosphere by additional bombing. We’ll also learn how the threats of nuclear war by the U.S. and North Korea are causing great alarm on the Hawaiian Islands.

> Our final event before leaving for Hawaii will be an Bon Voyage party in San Diego, on Sunday, October 14, 2 pm – 4 pm, at the Grassroots Oasis, 3130 Moore St. (off Rosecrans near Old Town). Come meet the crew and see our award-winning documentary,Making Waves: Rebirth of the Golden Rule (25 min.) Enjoy wine, beer, soft drinks, snacks and great company! $20 suggested donation, nobody turned away for lack of funds.

> We will soon start looking for a weather window and hope to leave the West Coast as early as October 15. The crossing will take 3 or 4 weeks.
