Inferno in Paradise Shows Survival Imperative of Peace Conversion in U.S.

Northern California, Thanksgiving, 2018

--by John Lewallen

I cried when I read that the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians was
donating a million dollars in disaster relief funds for residents of
Paradise, California, a town of 27,000 which was completely destroyed by a
sudden fiery inferno. The only comparable destruction in California history
was the nineteenth century extermination campaign against tribal people. The
Lytton Band of Pomo Indians show the redemptive power of love and
forgiveness we so urgently need nationally and internationally for our very
survival.

The need to convert from a nation in the thrall of a
military-industrial complex draining our resources and killing our soul has
become a survival need for us all, as we face the disasters unfolding at
home. The tremendous outpouring of community support for fire victims is
hopeful and heartening. Let's carry this spirit into national policy while
we still can.
