John,

Big changes require patience, intention, focus—and lots of help.

So it is with our 10-year roadmap to win the 28th Amendment to combat corruption and empower citizens instead of money. With more than 200,000 American Promise supporters in 50 states, we’re on track with our plan and look forward to tallying more successes and building our community of concerned and courageous citizens. This movement requires all of us, no matter what particular issues motivate us. In this newsletter, we feature testimonials from two citizens ready to fight for political representation for two different reasons.

As our nation observed Veterans Day this week to honor those who have served our country, Chet Hunt, a Vietnam veteran and a citizen leader in <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=6b6cfab480&e=9ea5be06a6> APAK, the Knoxville, Tennessee, American Promise Association, <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=c26cf9d032&e=9ea5be06a6> shared his point of view that big money in politics threatens the very ideals our nation was founded upon—the same ideals he fought for as a service member.

In <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=fba395aba5&e=9ea5be06a6> another recent article, American Promise member Melissa Gough shares one of the key reasons she hopes to get big money out of politics: to enable scientifically sound policy on climate change, which has become increasingly divisive and politicized since Citizens United, despite dire warnings from scientists across the globe.

At American Promise, we’re bringing together these voices—those who want to protect our nation and our planet—plus many more so we can amplify our message and build a powerful movement to win historic, fundamental reform. Stay tuned. In the coming weeks we’ll be sharing more about our plans for the coming year and the many ways you can get involved to help us make this historic reform happen.

The State of Our Movement: By the Numbers

After the successes for democracy reforms in the midterm elections, we’re ramping up for major action nationwide in 2019. As we roll out our plans to this community—and welcome your feedback—we wanted to pause and take stock of our wins so far. Here’s a look at some key numbers American Promise is tracking as we prepare for progress in the coming year.

Fighting for Our Nation—Once Again

As the United States honors those who served on Veterans Day, American Promise Association citizen leader Chet Hunt reflects on the sacrifices fellow Americans have made generation after generation to preserve our freedom and secure our constitutional rights—and how corporatization of our democracy threatens those freedoms and rights.

To Save the World, First We Need to Save Democracy

The U.S. position on climate change is intimately connected to the way our elections are funded. Our current system allows the voice of corporate special interests to discredit accepted science and drown out the millions of individual voices begging for action on climate change.

| What We’re Tracking This Week

>From the Boston Globe: These <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=f40d9d39f9&e=9ea5be06a6> interactive maps from the Globe break down the Massachusetts midterm ballot questions by towns that supported them. Question 2 asked voters if they want a citizen commission to pursue an amendment to limit big money in politics. Guess how many towns said no: ZERO!

>From (Tacoma) News Tribune: Corporations from Texas, Georgia, New York, California and Washington, D.C., donated tens of millions for two initiatives on the Washington state ballot. Big Oil contributed a record-breaking $31.5 million to defeat Initiative 1631, which would have imposed the nation’s first direct fee on carbon emissions. Big Soda spent $22.1 million to pass Initiative 1634, which will ban local taxes on sugary drinks and other grocery items. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=2adf207a0e&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.

>From Axios: Oil and utility companies contributed nearly $100 million to oppose ballot measures in three Western states—and all three measures were defeated. In Colorado, oil companies spent $30 million to oppose a proposal that would have essentially banned new drilling in many parts of the state. In Washington state, BP and Chevron were among the funders opposing a proposal to impose a carbon fee on large emitters to then fund a range of clean-energy initiatives. And Arizona Public Service, the state’s biggest utility, provided nearly $30 million to fight expansion of renewable electricity in that state. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=74175abd0a&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.

>From NPR: Democrat leaders say the first vote in the U.S. House will be on legislation to remove obstacles to voting, close loopholes in government ethics law and reduce the influence of political money. The bill aims to overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, which declared political spending is First Amendment free speech, and mandate more disclosure of outside money and establish a public-financing match for small contributions. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=582e8db11f&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.

>From the Sheridan Press: Volunteers with Wyoming Promise have collected more than the required number of signatures in Sheridan County to get a “free and fair elections” question on the ballot. Wyoming requires the signatures of 15 percent of registered voters in 16 of the state’s 23 counties, making it the most restrictive state in allowing citizen initiatives. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=438a1f3b77&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.

>From the Center for Responsive Politics: Congressional candidates who raised more campaign money than their opponents were the winners in most federal contests. Democrats took the House while outraising Republicans by more than $300 million. Including outside money and fundraising, the House candidate supported by more money won 91 percent of the time and the better-funded Senate candidate won 84 percent of the time. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=86a18a52b6&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.

>From the Sun Sentinel: In an opinion piece, Sam Daley-Harris of the citizen action group Civic Courage writes that it’s time for citizens to “get in the game” by joining advocacy organizations like American Promise and getting involved with the democratic process. “These groups know that having teammates matters, and so they form chapters that meet monthly,” he writes. “They practice to get good at democracy—learning how to speak powerfully, how to conduct an effective Congressional meeting.” <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=8490dae59f&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.

>From the Door County Daily News: The number of Wisconsin communities calling for a constitutional amendment to limit political spending grew to 142 after last week’s election. That’s when residents of nine communities voted to amend the U.S. Constitution to clarify that only human beings should have inalienable human rights and money is not the same thing as free speech. According to Wisconsin United to Amend, about 3 million people (55 percent of Wisconsinites) live in these jurisdictions. <https://americanpromise.us19.list-manage.com/track/click?u=7df407720bf61a8c8416bb9e7&id=b7ecadfb9c&e=9ea5be06a6> Read more.
