Subject: [MCN-Announce]- Rat Restaurant
To: MCN-Announce <announce at lists.mcn.org>

When we bought an electronic rat trap at the hardware store in Mendocino we
were told that rats are now a MAJOR problem here on the coast. They said
lots of people are coming in and asking what to do.

When we had large livestock we found that rats were coming into the barn to
munch on organic grain that the goats dropped. If you have an outdoor
birdseed bird feeder you may be inviting rats to dine below the feeder.
Rats and mice love grain and any little tidbits of food they can glean at
night.

We have a refrigerator in the barn and a mouse (or rat) actually ate the
refrigerator fan blade and the top of a plastic garbage can where grain was
stored. The refrigerator repairman said that manufacturers have started
making refrigerator blades from corn
 - so once again the rats/mice went for “the grain”.

So be aware that any food scraps, birdseed, livestock grain, etc. that is
left (or wherever) will make a tasty meal for the first rat who finds it
and then gives rave reviews of your “restaurant” to all his friends. :)

Good luck!
