Koch Attack!
Ann - The Koch brothers chose yesterday - the 53rd anniversary of the passage of Medicare - to drop their single payer hit piece. The study, published by a libertarian think tank, warns that expanding Medicare to everyone would mean an increase of $32 trillion in federal spending over the next decade.
But even the Koch-funded Mercatus Center couldn't hide the truth about single payer, finding also that the policy would insure 30 million more Americans and virtually eliminate out-of-pocket health care expenses while saving $2 trillion in the process<https://www.healthcare-now.org/wp-content/plugins/civicrm/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=95469&qid=9657066>.
Unfortunately, most major news outlets skipped over that seemingly important outcome, choosing to focus on the $32 trillion number instead. “Study: ‘Medicare for all’ projected to cost $32.6 trillion” was the headline that the AP ran, emphasizing in the first paragaph, "that's trillion with a "T."

This study is all about spin; even with the truth clearly spelled out in the report, the hope is that readers will be spooked by an "unprecedented strain on the federal budget" instead of the fact that we'll get more for less.

As we get closer to victory, we'll see the opposition step up attacks like this. The good news is that we've been here before; polling from before and after the primary - when single payer was under constant attack by center-left publications trying to undermine Bernie Sanders' presidential run - show that public support for single payer actually went up.

Sanders' response to the Koch report sums it up: "If every major country on earth can guarantee health care to all, and achieve better health outcomes, while spending substantially less per capita than we do, it is absurd for anyone to suggest that the United States cannot do the same."
