Dear Ann,

Right now, children are being locked up in cages without their parents, and their parents are being detained indefinitely in separate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) prisons. When immigrants are locked up, they become susceptible to violence, after having just uprooted their lives to seek refuge in the United States. ICE prisons are plagued with pervasive levels of sexual violence, human and civil rights abuses, and dangerously subpar access to critical medical care, all of which pose serious risks to the health and safety of children, mothers, and families. Meanwhile, the private prison industry is profiteering off of our suffering. We can’t just look away and allow this to continue. Two of the private prison industry leaders, CoreCivic and GEO Group, depend on debt financing from banks like Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase to conduct their day-to-day business operations, finance new facilities, and acquire smaller companies. Financing for-profit private prisons enables Trump to continue implementing and carrying out xenophobic policies that target our immigrant community and endanger our lives.
