Protect the iconic wilderness in Northwest CA
enter first name,
Northwest California is one of the most spectacular and biologically diverse places on earth, and it holds a magical reputation for millions of local Californians. From the fog-shrouded redwood forests of Humboldt County to the sunny oak woodlands and grasslands of Mendocino, from the soaring peaks of the Trinity Alps Wilderness to the turquoise pools of the Wild & Scenic Smith River, this region is home to some of the world’s most stunning landscapes.
In 2017, Representative Jared Huffman released a draft public lands bill called the Northern California Conservation and Recreation Act, aiming to protect local wild lands, expand recreational opportunities, improve fire management, and restore damaged watersheds. This effort benefits the region’s public lands, local economies, and the millions of visitors who come to experience the area's natural wonders.

The draft legislation will protect of 363,000 acres of wilderness, 480 miles of wild and scenic rivers, and establishes a 700,000-acre South Fork Trinity-Mad River Special Restoration Area. These old growth forests, crystalline waters, hiking trails, and unique areas need to be protected within the provisions of the Wilderness Act of 1964 to provide the strongest level of protection available for public land under American law. These designations will ensure the area's ecological and community benefits are preserved in perpetuity for future generations.
CalWild helped launch the Northwest California's Mountains and Rivers Campaign to build a "big tent" group of supporters. That meant approaching logging companies, ranchers, native american tribes, in addition to the traditional conservation allies. Having build that coalition, we are excited about the coming introduction of the bill and believe this effort is likely to serve as a model for years to come.
