Dear Richard, 


Thank you for contacting me with your thoughts about investigations into President Trump's ties to the Russian government. I appreciate hearing from you on this matter. 

As you may know, the Intelligence Community, made up of seventeen U.S. intelligence agencies including the CIA and FBI, released a statement in October 2016 expressing confidence that senior officials in the Russian government directed the cyberattacks on both private citizens and several U.S. political organizations, as well as the subsequent disclosure of emails to the site WikiLeaks, with the intent to interfere with the 2016 U.S. election. Since then, the Select Committees on Intelligence in both the House and Senate have commenced investigations into a much broader range of topics relating to Russian involvement in our election, including determining whether President Trump's campaign was in contact with the Russian government. Additionally, former FBI Director James Comey has confirmed that his agency is investigating any connections between Russia and President Trump's staff and associates.

While the appointment of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 election is a necessary first step, this will be an ongoing effort that involves sensitive and classified information. I will continue to work to fully understand — and make public — the scope of foreign intervention in our electoral process, as well as any ties between the Russian government and the Trump campaign and White House. For example, there remain many unanswered questions regarding former National Security Adviser to the President of the United States Michael Flynn, who had unexplained contacts with the Russian government and received undisclosed payments from Russian companies. Similarly, I remain very concerned by the ill-handled investigation formerly led by Congressman Devin Nunes, the Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, who was also a member of President Trump's transition team. 

To ensure that this investigation is not hampered by partisan interference, I am a cosponsor of the Protecting Our Democracy Act to establish a National Commission on Foreign Interference in the 2016 Election. Also, I am giving weekly, one-minute "Moment of Truth" speeches on the House floor that focus on the many aspects of Special Counsel Mueller's ongoing investigation and its findings. It is important to me that the evidence of President Trump's connections to Russia is included in the official Congressional Record.
