Dear Ui,
Oops. We had our bi-monthly MLK meeting today. It’s the first and third
Saturdays of the month at noon at the Senior Center. Sorry no email
reminder went out. Mea culpa. Looking forward to seeing you at the December
meetings.

Andy and Vicki are heading the program part of MLK so please check in with
them. It appears that the panel will be comprised of young folks. A new
young person joined us at our meeting today, Tim (sent by Susan Nutter). He
moved to Sacramento six months ago from Georgia (if I remember correctly)
and to Fort Bragg two months ago. He’s of African heritage and might be a
good addition to the panel, too. Tim’s email is mrtimwells at mail.com. It was
lovely having a young person join us and I hope we didn’t scare you off,
Tim. Another possibility for the panel might be someone from Fort Bragg
High School.

Will Smith has been added to our program. He will be reading the *I Have a
Dream* speech.

Just to update my email below, AVID will be sending us volunteers from the
middle school and the high school to help us. AVID is now a district-wide
program, beginning in elementary school through high school. SEIU 1021 will
be putting the word out to their members and will join us for MLK day;
they’ll bring their banner for the march. Still awaiting word from the
California Conservation Corps.

People wanted to know what AVID stands for; here’s the poop from their
website.

AVID's Mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students
for college readiness and success in a global society.

*What AVID is...*

   - AVID *is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual
   Determination.*
   - AVID *is an in-school academic support program for grades 4-12 that
prepares students for college eligibility and success.*
   - AVID *places academically average students in advanced classes.*
   - AVID *levels the playing field for minority, rural, low-income and
other students without a college-going tradition in their families.*
   - AVID *is for all students, but it targets those in the academic
   middle.*
   - AVID *is implemented school-wide and district-wide.*

*What AVID isn't...*

   - AVID *isn't a remedial program.*
   - AVID *isn't a free ride.*
   - AVID *isn't a niche program.*
   - AVID *isn't a college outreach program.*

*AVID Student Profile*

The AVID student is a student with academic potential:

   - Average-to-high test scores
   - 2.0-3.5 GPA
   - College potential with support
   - Desire and determination

The AVID student meets one or more of the following criteria:

   - First in family to attend college
   - Historically least served in four-year colleges (e.g.,
underrepresented as a racial or ethnic group)
   - Low income
   - Special circumstances

*AVID Students*

As an AVID student, you must commit to a challenging and rigorous
curriculum. This college track will help you excel in your academics,
making college an attainable goal. As an AVID student, you will:

   - Take individual responsibility for your own success.
   - Want to succeed.
   - Believe you can succeed.
   - Exhibit positive attitudes toward yourself and others.
   - Be open to new experiences in all phases of the program.
   - Want to become an independent learner.
   - Come to class prepared.
   - Serve as a role model for other students.
   - Share your work for the purpose of improving it.
   - Be willing to study in groups.
   - Keep your parents informed of your progress.
   - Become involved in campus activities.

*AVID Parents*

As an AVID parent, there are things you can do to support your child’s
academic success. As an AVID parent, you will:

   - Support the academic goals of your student.
   - Show interest in your student’s schoolwork.
   - Provide your student a time and place to study.
   - Be insistent and supportive that your student completes homework
   assignments.

The California Department of Education (CDE) has many resources for how you
can become more involved in your child’s education. Visit CDE
Parent/Family <http://www.cde.ca.gov/ls/pf/pf/> for more information.

*AVID Background *

The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program targets
students in the academic middle – B, C, and even D students – who have
the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard. AVID places
academically average students in advanced classes and provides them with an
elective class that prepares them to succeed in rigorous curricula, enter
mainstream activities in school, and increase their opportunities to enroll
in four-year colleges.

AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students
for college readiness and success in a global society. The AVID program
levels the playing field for minority, rural, low-income, and other
students without a college-going tradition in their families. Developed in
1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson, AVID has seen steady growth throughout
California, nationally, and internationally in the last 30 years.

   - More than 3,386 schools in 48 states and 15 foreign countries offer
   the AVID program.
   - More than 220,000 students have graduated from AVID programs.
   - 77 percent of AVID students were accepted to a four year college in
   2008.
   - Approximately 14.8 percent of AVID students in California plan to
attend a University of California (UC) campus.
   - Approximately 41.4 percent of AVID students in California plan to
attend a California State University (CSU) campus.
   - Approximately 88 percent of AVID students complete the a-g
   requirements for UC and CSU.

*AVID Purpose *

The purpose of AVID is to prepare students for college eligibility and
success. As AVID expands to a school-wide and district-wide program, it
impacts educators by increasing best practices for engaging all students
and increasing college readiness across the school and district. The
California Department of Education (CDE) works with the AVID regional
offices and the AVID Center to expand and support the AVID program in local
middle and high schools.

AVID regional offices also encourage (1) improved student access to
rigorous academic curriculum, including honors, Advanced Placement, and
International Baccalaureate courses; (2) effective articulation and feeder
patterns that enable students to be served by AVID programs in grades 6
through 12; and (3) increased adoption of AVID strategies on a school-wide
and district-wide basis.
Mahalo,
Linda

MLK panel update:

Vicki and I have found at least 4 youth so far who want to be on the
panel! Evan is still excited to be the moderator, he is the Mendo High
student I mentioned to this group before. So it would still be cool to
have the theme be March for Our Future, based on the youth-led march
happening nationwide on Jan. 20th. These youth will be telling the MLK
crowd about the march they are planning for Saturday, Jan. 20 in Fort
Bragg. Everyone is welcome, the youth will just be the leaders of it!

Best,
Andy
