Event Title: Regenerating and Building Your Soil
Event Date & Time: Thursday, December 7th, 2017, 7PM
Location: Community Center of Mendocino, 998 School St., Mendocino
The historical record shows that the collapses of many past civilizations can be attributed to the depletion of topsoil. Since the beginning of agricultural production in the Great Plains of North America in the 1880s, about one-half of its topsoil has disappeared. Depletion of topsoil can take place through water and wind erosion, over-tillage, overuse of nutrient inputs, compaction, pH problems, and salinization. On the average, it takes 500 years to build an inch of top soil, and in many cases in California it takes 2,000 years. A recent UN Report stated that we have only 60 years of top soil remaining. As human populations continue to increase, and our need for water and soil increase, the preservation, conservation and restoration of soils has become some of the most important work on Earth. Join us to learn some simple soil-related regenerative techniques for the land you steward, so that you can better care for and rebuild this precious resource.
