>From the very beginning, Northern Plains members have put everything on the line to protect Montana’s water.

Today we’re facing one of the greatest threats to our water in recent memory: the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Keystone XL would carry dirty, carbon-intensive tar sands from Alberta through Montana to the Gulf Coast for export.

Crossing two of Montana’s most iconic and critical waterways — the Missouri and the Yellowstone Rivers — Keystone XL poses a very real threat to our water.

Montanans have enough experience with ruptured oil pipelines — especially beneath the Yellowstone River — that we know the costs of a spill are too high.

When our water is threatened, so are our communities and our way of life.
