GOP’s Health Plan: Win the Lottery

This week, Republicans finally put out their alternative to the Affordable Care Act.

A full 10 percent of the bill text is devoted to lottery winners. It’s absurd, but also telling. This bill isn’t designed for regular people. It’s designed for winners – the wealthy, well born and the lucky.

For the rest of us, this bill is a disaster. It will:

  *   Revoke health insurance entirely for 10 million people covered by Medicaid.
  *   Ends subsidies that millions rely on and replaces them with fixed value tax credits that many won’t be able to use.
  *   Use the savings to give a giant tax cut to the wealthiest Americans.

This is insanity. Instead of worrying about how to cover the 27 million uninsured Americans, Republicans have issued a blueprint for the complete collapse of our healthcare system.

Republicans have every intention of ramming this bill through without thorough hearings or normal scrutiny. Democrats will not be allowed to filibuster.

The only way we can stop them is to show up at town halls, district offices and on Capitol Hill and make our voice heard. People’s Action is a national network of community organizers and is leading this effort.
