In 1967, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., whose life is celebrated every year on the third Monday of January, received an honorary degree from Newcastle University, the first African American to be so honored. In his acceptance speech King said, "There are three urgent and indeed great problems that we face not only in the United States of America but all over the world today. That is the problem of racism, the problem of poverty and the problem of war.”
In this, the 50th anniversary of the Newcastle speech, we must acknowledge that not only have these problems persisted, they’ve gotten much worse, due to our current administration’s decrees supporting bigotry, sexism, classism, environmental degradation and more. The fact that poverty and homelessness are at levels not seen since the Great Depression, are indications that equality remains a distant dream.
On January 15, 2018, please join us for our annual march and celebration to overcome racism, poverty, and the persistence of war. Bring your children and grandchildren to see how we can work for peace, justice, and equality for all.
We’ll meet at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church (620 E. Redwood in Fort Bragg) for the march through town. Our agenda includes, Will Smith reciting Dr. King's "I have a Dream” speech; a panel of local students from Mendocino and Fort Bragg will discuss Dr. King's legacy; a wholesome meal follows along with our music program. And don’t forget the magnificant MLK birthday cake for all.
There is no fee to attend, though donations are welcome.
Come join us. We look forward to celebrating with you.
