U.S. coastal waters provide important economic and environmental benefits to the millions of Americans living near the shore as well as those in the heartland. Thus, it is critical that strong laws and safeguards are in place to ensure that activities are carried out in ways that conserve ocean wildlife, waters, and habitats, and promote fair and equitable use of our nation’s resources.

The Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act governs our nation’s marine fisheries and has, in recent years, drastically reduced the number of overfished populations as well as rebuilt more than 40 previously depleted fish stocks. These successes spring from the implementation of thoroughly studied and reviewed regulations, most of which start with the direct involvement of fishermen, scientists, local officials, and others at the regional level.

Recent efforts to roll back fish conservation rules undermine this structure by implying that the regulations used to put the Magnuson-Stevens Act into place hurt jobs and coastal communities, when in fact, it is these regulations that promote stability and growth among recreational and commercial fishermen, seafood distributors, and other marine-related businesses.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is accepting comments on the role of these regulations in implementing the Magnuson-Stevens Act, as well as several other ocean laws. This is your opportunity to make your voice heard to support healthy fisheries and oceans.

Our marine fish populations are a vital resource that should be safeguarded for future generations. We need your voice now if we want to protect them.
