As a member of the Fort Bragg community that works on the FBHS property every day of the week, I am appalled at the fact that there was such limited opportunity for public input on the clear cutting of the last remaining stand of forest that lies between Safe Passage and Fort Bragg High School on the north end Dana St. in Fort Bragg. All tree cutting should cease until the community that this is effecting has been informed as to why the trees are all being cut, with a two week public comment period that will allow for at least 3 advisors from local forestry services who have expertise in this field. Half the trees are already gone. This clear cutting of trees will have a massive impact on the gardens and ecology of the surrounding area. The gardens immediately adjacent to this clear cut will be impacted greatly. The trees serve as the only wind buffer from coastal winds, as the rest of this area is otherwise surrounded by flat football and baseball fields that are watered all summer. These trees also serve to sequester carbon. They help to cool the area immediately south of the high school that is covered in black top for the high school parking lot. Trees can be trimmed and tended to if there is any hazard. But to clear cut the entire stand seems to be a quick and easy answer to a complex issue. Please stop all cutting of these trees until the community that is effected may have the opportunity to learn more about what is going on and have a two week period to submit public comment.

FYI from Redwood Mary

There has been no major efforts to replant trees in Fort Bragg!

Trees have also been proven to have a positive impact on skin cancer, asthma, hypertension, and other stress related illness by filtering out polluted air, reducing smog formation, providing shade from solar radiation, and providing an attractive, calming setting for recreation.

Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates, carbon monoxide, cadmium, nickel, and lead are all pollutants that trees work constantly to remove from the air.

Trees also form an effective sound absorbing barrier to help reduce unwanted urban noise pollution.

The biodiversity of trees in providing natural habitats for birds, squirrels, and other fauna are considered to some as incalculable.
