-Present, John, Bob, Irene, Richard, Dan, Sheila, Guests Helen and Gerry from the Golden Rule in Eureka.
- The Golden Rule is a sailboat owned by Veterans for Peace in Samoa, and is going on a trip down the Coast in June to try to get the United Nations to ban Nuclear War. They do Peace Action training camps, sailing training, peace actions and more. We need to do promotional flyers. They will be here June 11th, 12th and 13th and will be docked in our harbor, and will give sailing trips out in the Ocean for us. We will host a potluck for them. There is a move to bring back the draft, but most people oppose the draft and many think it is not good to have military bases in so many countries around the world, especially the VFP members. We will start the publicity after May Day. Contact John Llewellyn, who is a longtime peace activist who also is working to get a Nuclear War ban in place and has written a book. He is in the VFP movement inland and is a seaweed harvester.
- People Power event through ACLU was well attended at the FB SR. Center, but John sent out surveys and follow-up e-mails that generated no response. What more can we do to mobilize action? There are many issues such as immigration, ICE, police, civil rights, etc. Susan Nutter is sending out messages daily with actions, and there have been some good marches and events, so maybe a lot of folks have full schedules.
- May Day event focuses on workers, the fight for $15 an hour wage and the war threat, so for our May Day event on Mon 5/1/17 (3-6pm) we will have a speaker named Raul Guardia from the SEIU Union in Eureka coming. Ann called the Union representative for Nurses and Grocery workers, but had no response, so the SEIU Union rep is our speaker. Will can make posters and flyers and Mendo Litho will print them up so we can pass them out after the EarthDay Science March. Richard is contacting musicians, we will meet 3pm at the Bainbridge Park and have the speaker, music, march and food. Sheila does not want to check her e-mail so will use the telephone for contacts.Carrie will talk to the police about our march. We will have another meeting at the Sr. Center on Sat 3/29 at noon, just to finalize the plans. Ann asked Steven Bates if he is available but he is not, John asked Holly Tannen but she is busy, Richard will contact Chris Skyhawk. If it rains that day we can use the Trinity Church Hall.
- Our Representative Jared Huffman is holding a Town Hall event at Cotton Auditorium on Wed 4/19 at 1pm from 1-2:30. He will answer questions from the community and tell us what the opposition party is doing to stop Trump from destroying our democracy and starting another war in the Middle East. He has already bombed Syria and Afghanistan, threatened North Korea, alienated Muslims, Mexico, Judges, appointed heads of Cabinet Departments who want to dismantle the agencies they are in charge of, and overturned environmental protections put in place by Obama. We have a lot to ask Huffman!
Meeting adjourned at 2pm.
