- MLK Day was being planned, Linda Jupiter has the list of volunteers and Service Groups and she will contact them. The date will be Monday Jan 16 with the March at 11, the Program at 12, and Lunch following the Program. Richard will ask some singers, we will find a good M/C. Maybe Chris Skyhawk again or maybe Sherry Glaser, but if people start to talk during the program there will be an O/M person at the tables who will try to keep order so everyone can hear the speaker. John will collect donations at the door, and he will find a Native American Speaker for the program. Maybe someone who has been active at the Standing Rock demonstrations. Agnes will organize food. Carrie will get police permits and help organize the March and parade route. Ann will secure the building, come early to help set up, stay late to help clean up, be liason for kitchen crew, see about a Nursery for children who cannot stay quiet during the program. Will Beaumont will make a flyer. Bob and Dan will help cleanup. It was suggested that Jared Huffman be asked to attend and tell us what he is doing for our environment. We will have another discussion at our next meeting.
- Standing Rock is a huge issue with many local Native Americans and supporters going to North Dakota to stand with the Water Protectors. Wells Fargo Bank is a big financer, with many other supporting banks funneling their money thru them. The bank in Denmark pulled out after the protesters got attacked by the militarized police force hired by the Oil Corporation. Ann, Richard and Carrie attended an event at the Grange near the Sherwood Pomo Reservation in Redwood Valley and heard from speakers who went to North Dakota, and are gathering supplies and food to head back. It was very moving hearing their accounts of the protests against oil pipelines under their water supply. Our friend Millie Harmon left yesterday from Mendo and will be there 10 days. There will be a local event at Eagles Hall on Dec 3rd, 10 am.
- Progressive Alliance Center is having a Yard Sale today, and the Center will close. We need to keep in touch with Susan Nutter, Garth, Rachel and Neil, and other activists we met there. They have sale items like buttons, signs, T-shirts, more.
- Meeting place was discussed. Company Store will be ok for our next meeting, but in case it gets too noisy or we have too many volunteers to meet re:MLK day, Ann will get the Sr Center key from Charles and we will have to pay a fee. We were also offered a space in Terry Vaughn's Mendocino TV studio at the back of the Company Store - Sheila will call him.
- Elector website that has a list of the members of the Electoral College. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by almost 2 million but Trump took the Electoral College votes and there have been protests daily since the election. It is possible to get Electors to flip their votes so the popular candidate wins! We are worried about what Trump can do to us!
- Street Rally is getting record numbers of honks, there is a new sign Sheila made about Standing Rock. We will start at 2pm to 4pm next week, because it gets dark so early. There is a new Bank of America kiosk near Harvest Market but we don't have enough people to go there as well as Wells Fargo and Chase.
- Sanctuary City is a proposal our City Council is exploring, as we will not stand for deportations here. Come to the next City Council meeting Monday 11/28 to speak up for the idea. 40% of our population is Latino, some undocumented.
- Rally in Mendocino for Standing Rock today from 12:30 to 2:30. John is going after this meeting.
- After the inauguration of Trump there is a million Women march planned.
- Navy came out with their EIS about training and testing in the Ocean, and Barbara wants to make a new sign.
- Thanksgiving Dinner will be served to the Community at the Church on Sanderson Way and Queenie from Elk is coordinating.
Next Meeting Dec 3 at Company Store from 12-2. We may move to the Sr Center if necessary.
