Help protect California's coast

California's coast needs strong protection, and decisions this week on
Coastal Commission's leadership will chart the future of our coastline.
Speak out to help save our shores!

Take Action

Dear Nancy,

It's no secret that big, deep-pocketed developers covet California's
pristine coastline. And a strong, independent California Coastal
Commission is essential to blocking their relentless development schemes.

What was secret -- until now -- has been an effort to oust the current
executive director, Dr. Charles Lester, a stalwart conservationist who has
not bent to developers' every wish.

Removing Dr. Lester from his post at the California Coastal Commission
could weaken protections for our state's beloved coast.

That's why your voice is needed -- tell the Commission to continue their
impressive work to protect the coast by keeping their leader on the job.

Make no mistake: California's coast is a fragile resource and protecting
it from competing interests and demands is a difficult job. And while
there is no public evidence that Dr. Lester did anything wrong, there are
plenty of reasons to keep him on the job.

Under Dr. Lester's leadership, the Coastal Commission fought private
interests to guarantee free, public access to hundreds of miles of
pristine and urban coastline ... protected coastal communities from
climate change by ensuring sea level rise is taken into account in local
coastal planning ... and championed a Local Coastal Program for the Santa
Monica Mountains that protects open space.

Thankfully, the law entitles Dr. Lester to defend himself at a public
hearing this Wednesday in Morro Bay. And Dr. Lester is already speaking
out, defending the Commission's record under his leadership and offering a
constructive path forward.

But before the hearing, it's absolutely critical for residents like you to
speak out and help shut down this threat to California's coastline.

The fact is, California's coastline is more than breathtakingly beautiful,
it's vital to our economy and way of life. And the Coastal Commission is
the reason it hasn't been entirely paved over by large-scale development.
Let's keep it that way.

Sincerely,

Joel Reynolds
Western Director, NRDC

P.S. Want to do more? Speak out at Dr. Lester's public hearing on
Wednesday, February 10, at 10 a.m. The meeting will be held at Morro Bay
Community Center Auditorium, 1001 Kennedy Way, Morro Bay, CA 93442.
