Hi Garth -
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is threatening - in just three days - to shut down Oceti Sakowin, the largest encampment of water protectors and allied protesters opposing the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Send a message to the Corps demanding that they back off from their plan to shut down Oceti Sakowin.<https://ms.clicks.actions.aclu.org/t/gcfbaSSLcQBMSdHDY6ERToa1ZpIXEBsaaaaEO3tBMEDFVxaa?p=6@xCzB2&j=mjbsd7v6w_lhfdq.Xth&q=a&2=>
Late last week the Corps issued notice to Dave Archambault II, the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe chairman, that on December 5th they'll close public access to the land where the encampment is set up, and threatened "prosecution under federal, state, or local laws" of those who remain.
The Corps promised to create a "free speech zone" as an alternate protest location. That silences free speech - the area is too far away for the message to be heard.
You signed our petition calling on the Department of Justice to demilitarize Standing Rock. Now we need you to take the next step: let the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers know you won't stand for shutting down protesters.<https://ms.clicks.actions.aclu.org/t/gcfbaSSLcQBMSdHDY6ERToa1ZpIXEBsaaaaEO3tBMEDFVxaa?p=6@xCzB2&j=mjbsd7v6w_lhfdq.Xth&q=X&2=>
The Corps wrote in the notice that the decision to shut down "is necessary to protect the general public from the violent confrontations between protesters and law enforcement officials that have occurred in this area."
But the violence comes from a heavily militarized law enforcement response, which has called in "help" from over 76 different law enforcement agencies.
Public pressure matters - in the face of it, the governor of North Dakota just retracted his promise to block food and medical supplies from reaching the encampments.
Give the protesters the space to make their voices heard. Send a message now that enough is enough.<https://ms.clicks.actions.aclu.org/t/gcfbaSSLcQBMSdHDY6ERToa1ZpIXEBsaaaaEO3tBMEDFVxaa?p=6@xCzB2&j=mjbsd7v6w_lhfdq.Xth&q=Y&2=>
