Present: Sheila Dawn, Irene Malone, Ann, Will B., Jinx Bridges, John Fremont, Dan Baker, Agnes Woolsey, and guests Durand Evan and Michael Hodges.
- May Day event - International Workers Day- we want Unions and Labor groups, Voter Registration, kid's games, a march with protest signs, spring celebration. Sheila will speak to the City about permits, park benches, our March. Ann will speak to SEIU Union, call the local Teachers Union rep. and look into possible conflicts with other events. The Cinco de Mayo event will be May 7th, which is Mothers Day. No other conflicts found yet. There will be a planning meeting Sat May 9 at 12 noon here in the Sr. Center room. Nurses in Ft Bragg may have a Union... Agnes will contact the Newspapers and Sheila will announce on KZYX.
- In two weeks Amy Goodman is speaking in Ukiah.
- Homeless issues - Durand is concerned about how the homeless are sabotaged and "trapped" into the system by the local "helping professionals" and police. Tow companies and police are in cahoots to overcharge and put liens on vehicles so that the people who are in trouble owe so much money that the companies end up seizing the vehicles and still charging fines. They are ripping off our community and also doing asset forfeitures. Anyone who speaks up will be removed from the shelters for life and be taken off the list for Section 8 housing.
- John Fremont is working on a Police Advisory Board that will start in September to address injustice issues. Some folks will go to the Monday Apr 11 meeting of the City Council to speak up about several issues.
- Charter Project Update - Agnes is working on Town Halls so folks become informed about the Charter. There will be a slide show, Q&A and fundraising, and then afterward the speaker, Paul Cienfuegos of Community Rights fame will speak. There will be raffle tickets with prizes given after the "meat" of the program, and Ann will help with refreshments (coffee, tea, snacks). Robin Sunbeam sent PSAs that can be printed online or will be available at the May Day event, along with yard signs.
- Street Protest - The "honk meter" counted 56 honks at Wells Fargo and 60 honks at Chase. It generates enthusiasm to have a count of the honks.
- There should be a "Bill of Rights for the Homeless" to impress that they deserve respect, and Sheila says she has something she will bring to share at the next meeting.
Next meeting for planning net Sat 4/9.
