“Imagine having a group of sincere, friendly people ask you what you need in your life, then think long and hard about how to make it happen. Then imagine being able to do the same for them.

It’s called a gifting circle and on Monday, at the invitation of Vancouver Gift Economy founder Brice Royer, I participated in one.

The gift economy is based on the premise that transactions involving money separate people and pre-empt any relationship between buyer and seller. I give you something, you give me money. End of story. But in a gift economy, I give you something, you are grateful. You start thinking about ways you can help me. Or maybe, you pay the gift forward to someone else. Relationships form, and communities grow. This is how human society used to function, and still does in some places. The cash economy grows by monetizing transactions that used to be given freely.”
