Organizers of the Occupy Mendocino have announced that it will now make the Friday afternoon protests in front of Bank of America and Chase a weekly event.

In an email to the newspaper, Rick Childs wrote the protest is about "corporate greed, corporations not paying fair-share taxes, the rich becoming increasingly wealthy (with the aid of Congressional special favors like lower capital gains taxes, loopholes, etc.), banks getting government bailouts but rewarding their CEOs anyway with $25-100 million compensation."

The group's press release states, "This movement is leaderless because we are all a part of the 99 percent and we are creating this movement together. The movement is not about any political party, it's a movement about the 99 percent.

"What's the Occupy movement all about? It's about U.S. and world citizens taking a stand against job scarcity, corporate greed, bailouts, Wall Street impunity, government corruption, etc.

"When our government, corporations, and banking system aren't working for the people then "we the people" are voicing our concerns in a peaceful way.

"We stand in solidarity with those around the world who want to turn our world around. This movement is set up in, for, and by the community. This is an exciting time in our lives and right now we need to make our strong, yet rural voices heard. Occupy Mendocino Community has been created to share, inform, activate and learn."

The Advocate-News posed the question on Facebook, what is the "Occupy" protest about? Within the first 12 hours there were over 3,000 impressions. As of press time there were 29 comments. Examples of the excerpted comments are:

- Too much corporate power.

- I think it's about how big business has such a big hand in government. And how it's making the middle class disappear into the lower class financial level. The upper crust is not only retaining the wealth, but getting wealthier to boot.

- I think it's about a bunch of people who honestly don't consider how good they have it compared to the rest of the world.

- It's about corruption and justice for all and wanting a law-abiding government and country again.

- It's about wanting a change in legislation to rein in the banks' wild speculative financial dealings that we, the taxpayers, are paying the penalty. And wanting a change in legislation that allows corporations too much political power and business policies that do not promote the general good of the country or its people.

- I think it is about people that are tired of supporting a system that is only for the few.

- It's about eliminating corporate personhood, making large corporations and the wealthy pay taxes.

- I'm not sure how it will help except to raise people's awareness of the economic situation and get their attention to what is really going on with their money so they will make conscious decisions about where to store it and where to spend it.

Bank protests are from 4 to 6 p.m. on the corner of Main and Alder streets. The next bank protest is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, Oct. 28. Contact Laurie Starr at lstarr6 at gmail.com for more information.
