Renter Nation- Training in Minnesota and Beyond
Upon request by Occupy Our Homes Minnesota (OOHMN), Homes For All conducted a tenant organizing training September 13th-14th in Minneapolis. With success and victories in their foreclosure organizing, OOHMN is expanding and focusing on tenant and neighborhood organizing. Residents from over 15 neighborhoods attended the trainings (one or both days) including tenants and homeowners.
HUD, Stop Selling Our Neighborhoods to Wall Street!
The Department of Housing and Urban Development has a mission to create more stable and affordable housing for all Americans. However, our study, Vulture Capital Hits Home: How HUD is Helping Wall Street and Hurting Our Communities, showed that this is actually not what is happening. A HUD division called the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) insures millions of mortgages in the U.S. In the wake of the housing crisis, FHA created a program called the Distressed Asset Stabilization Program, which is supposed to sell off seriously delinquent FHA insured loans in ways that “stabilize” neighborhoods. Instead, they are selling them off to the highest bidder.
Update on FHFA Lawsuit and Next Steps with Director Watt
High rents and the scarcity of affordable housing are some of the most serious issues affecting most Americans.
Last year, the National Low Income Housing Coalition and the Right To The City Alliance sued the Acting Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), then Edward DeMarco, for his failure to invest in the National Housing Trust Fund (NHTF). The national lawsuit cited his violation of the 2008 Housing and Economic Recovery Act (HERA), an act which requires Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, overseen by (FHFA), to contribute a portion of their revenue to the National Housing Trust Fund.
