**November 11, 2014 • Please forward widely*
*“Si, se puede!” “Yes, we can!”*
*Stop Fast Track and Stop the TPP—the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade
agreement*
Don’t let the TPP take away our democratic rights as individuals and as
community! We must continue to assert our rights over corporate rights and
stop the corporate, political and financial elite from establishing global
corporate rule by “free” trade agreement
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=wCRBCVQfd79FBjE2QQ3ou9LeMxpRW1IN>
.
Overall the TPP will impact local and national economies so as to
accelerate inequality, exploitation of the working class, privatization and
the higher cost of essential public services (including creating a market
for water), increased land grabs and mining, and put people and the planet
at great risk of global warming and extreme weather.
*Join the week of action from November 8-14 to Stop Fast Track—Part of the
Global Week of Action to Stop the TPP. *
This past Saturday, 10,000 people marched in cities across New Zealand
against the TPP and unjust trade. And this Monday, activists began
delivering thousands of signatures to Sen. Wyden demanding that he
#StopFastTrack, as others marched across the Capitol to remind all members
of Congress that the TPP must be stopped.
Why action this week? This week Pres. Obama travels to Asia
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Cf6ENRiovsJ1%2BkIX0YisHNLeMxpRW1IN>
to try to finalize TPP negotiations. He’ll attend multiply economic
meetings in China, Myanmar and Australia with trade negotiators, CEOs, and
heads of state on a trip described as part of “our rebalancing strategy in
Asia…to ensure that we are fostering an open, transparent security and
economic order amid what is an increasing and already high demand for U.S.
leadership in the region.”
This trip comes as the “Lame Duck” session of Congress gets underway. Let’s
be sure that Fast Track does not get quietly sneaked through the House of
Representatives during the session.
*Here’s what you can do:*
*First: *Follow the lead of Madison and Dane County, WI and Berkeley, CA
and present a “TPP-Free Zone”
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=6FbyX2Mj84qtYCH2prqmntLeMxpRW1IN>
Resolution to your City Council or place as a Warrant Article on your 2015
Town Meeting Agenda.
It’s time to say to the U.S. Trade Representative and the almost 600
corporate representatives that are sitting at the table in secret
negotiations that will affect every aspect of our lives:
*“If you, our unelected representatives, create this corporate-driven
monstrosity and then go to Congress for a rubber stamp, WE WILL NOT OBEY.”
We don’t want these climate-busting trade agreements!*
It’s time to make our municipalities “TPP-Free Zones,” following in the
footsteps of the successful resistance to an earlier trade agreement, the
Multilateral Agreement on Investment, which was defeated in 1998 thanks to
a global grassroots campaign.
Read and use the Berkeley, CA “Resolution to Protect Democracy and the
Public Interest from TAFTA & TPP Trade Agreements”
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=YoHlEKvaqDJLAq0j5EsBvxKphlKplEiv>
as a model. Here’s a “TPP/TAFTA Fact Sheet” on local impacts.
*Second: *Call Your Congressmember.
1. Tell your Representative: Don’t betray democracy! No “Fast Track” for
the TPP. Click here

or here
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=T4fOFoS8%2BcW4ecK4HchwYxKphlKplEiv>
to find your Representative’s phone number.
2. Write a Letter to the Editor calling on Congress to oppose Fast Track
Authority for the President to ram the TPP through Congress. Here’s a good fact
sheet
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=%2FlwdTMEa%2F3NsKD3v4xP689LeMxpRW1IN>
on the issues. Our Stop the TPP
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=HAly8JeG0Tt4R%2BRj6mEUh9LeMxpRW1IN>
page has other resources you can use.
3. Organize or attend a Fast Track event
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=G6lTo46j0P1iH%2BUaDPS%2BBtLeMxpRW1IN>
in your community.
*Why oppose Fast Track?* Fast Track shuts down the democratic process and
cedes Congressional constitutional authority to oversee trade with foreign
nations to the President to negotiate and finalize so-called “free” trade
agreements like the TPP and submit the final agreement to Congress. For
more than four years Pres. Obama has been negotiating the TPP, but now
needs either Fast Track, or Sen. Ron Wyden’s (D-OR) new “Smart Fast Track,”
to ram this undemocratic corporate agenda through Congress. Under Fast
Track, Congress has only 90 days to read an immensely complex text, several
thousands pages long. Fast Track allows only limited debate and no formal
Congressional hearing process or amendments. Congress is permitted nly a
“yes” or “no” vote.
The TPP is the first trade agreement negotiated in complete secrecy. As
many as 600 corporate representatives from Wall Street, big Ag, big pharma,
dirty energy, the military, the chemical industry, etc., have been at the
table. Only recently have certain members of Congress been allowed to read
texts in a “secure” room, but they are barred from taking notes or
discussing the content publicly. We only know the content of a few “draft”
chapters because the texts have been leaked.
Why oppose the TPP? Read our latest fact sheet
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=4FiqB1XZEVsdXsRrt9Qtj9LeMxpRW1IN>.
The corporate agenda wins in every case. For example, the TPP...
● *cancels “Buy American” and “Buy Local” policies* that support our
national and local economies. This off-shores more jobs and manufacturing
with climate-impacts from ocean transport.
● *features dangerous new provisions*. A “docking provision” allows other
countries to join the TPP after the original 12 negotiating nations ratify
it. There is also a new “Harmonization Chapter” that mandates setting up
new national bureaucracies to review laws and regulations to ensure they
“harmonize” with all TPP provisions. This ensures that national laws that
now protect public health, labor, the environment, food safely, etc., will
be driven down to the lowest common denominator.
● *accelerates **trading nature for profit*
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=df6UytFNoebQXtPvg6UVMPth0taR%2FKi0>
with devastating impacts on the environment and climate
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Ff5XDRXqRDFCOQgC2ZxHSdLeMxpRW1IN>
because of increased U.S. export of dirty fuels—especially natural gas from
fracking— and expansion of land grabs for biofuels and GMO crops in
developing countries that have poor environmental regulations.
● *gives sweet deals to big pharma*
<http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=yHOmvaRfNcTf3IypxqaEzRKphlKplEiv>
to protect their patents and profits on medicines while low-cost generics
on which we all depend to reduce healthcare costs are limited.
*Act Now.*
* Introduce a TPP Free Zone Resolution in your community! Act Now. Call
your Representative, write a Letter to the Editor and see if there is a
local action you can join.*
Thank you for all you do for democracy,
