14 Marriage States and Counting
October 24, 2013
We live in a nation divided between states that recognize and protect the lives and relationships of LGBT people and those that openly discriminate against and stigmatize our families. While the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on DOMA means that many LGBT families have federal protections and rights, NCLR will not stop until every LGBT family achieves full equality regardless of where they live.
That’s why we’re currently working on marriage equality cases in 10 states, doing whatever it takes to get the job done. We’re representing couples in New Mexico and Tennessee and supporting or assisting behind the scenes in eight other states.
Please give today.
We need your support to bring full equality to every LGBT family. We need to raise $20,000 by November 1st to support our marriage equality work.
There is no question that discriminatory marriage laws stigmatize our lives and our families, and invite further discrimination against LGBT people in every realm of society, including in the workplace, in schools, and in public accommodations, like restaurants, libraries, and hotels. We must challenge laws that openly discriminate against our families and fight for a world in which all families are respected and protected.
We are leading the charge in Tennessee and New Mexico. Just this week, we filed a case on behalf of four legally married same-sex couples in Tennessee, challenging laws that prevent the state from recognizing their marriages and treating them the same as all other legally married couples in Tennessee.
And yesterday, the New Mexico Supreme Court heard oral argument in our case on behalf of six same-sex couples who wish to marry, or have married, in that state.
Your investment today will go directly to the heart of the marriage equality work in progress right now.
To the finish line,
Kate Kendell, Esq.
