Ann, thanks for telling your Senator to support SB 241 to provide desperately needed revenue to restore the California Dream.

The progressive movement is powerful for two reasons. The first is that people like you are taking action. The second is that when we band together, we're unstoppable.

If you can get even one more person to join you, you'll double your impact. Just share on Facebook or Twitter.

Even better, forward the email below to a friend or use the tools on this page.

Thank you!

Rick.

I just contacted the California Senate demanding Sacramento make Big Oil pay for profiting off our natural resources, just like in every other state, so we can begin to refund cuts to public higher education and our parks.

Join me here: http://act.couragecampaign.org/sign/oil_severance_tax_steinberg/

California is the 4th-largest oil-producing state, but it is the ONLY state in the top ten that does NOT tax Big Oil. We could raise $2 billion per year to begin repairing the damage of previous cuts to public education, but only if Democrats in the Legislature use their new super-majority power to pass it.

Sarah Palin signed Alaska's oil severance tax of 25%! Texas charges 7.5%.(1) Why doesn't California make Big Oil pay for the privilege of profiting off our natural resources? State Senator Noreen Evans (D-Santa Rosa) has proposed Senate Bill 241, which would tax oil extraction at a modest 9.9%. Public higher education would receive 93% of revenues, and 7% would go to the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Stand with Sen. Evans and tell Sacramento: "Make Big Oil pay their fair share to the people of California, while refunding public higher education and state parks. Pass SB 241."

In previous years when similar measures have been on the statewide ballot, Big Oil has defeated it by saturating the airwaves with lies about how it will raise gas prices. Oil is a global market, and study after study and study shows that Alaskans and Texans don't pay anything extra thanks to the taxes there.(2) With the new super-majority, California Democrats can pass this no-brainer tax legislation in spite of Big Oil's deception.

In the last 20 years, tuition for the University of California and California State University systems has increased more than 300%.(3) Our engine of economic growth -- providing a ladder of opportunity for students, regardless of background or economic status -- is crumbling. Well-qualified students are shut out or saddled with enormous debt. Enrollment at community colleges has dropped by 500,000 thanks to tuition hikes. (4)
