It was a long and interesting public hearing on Tuesday in Fort Bragg
regarding the Ten Mile Dunes. From my point of view, the State Parks
project to remove the northern part of the Haul Road (north of Ward Ave. to
the Ten Mile bridge) should go forward. As things currently stand (the BOS
will revisit the matter on August 26 in a special meeting), my best guess is
that there is a board majority of Gjerde, Pinches and Brown that will insist
a new trail be constructed, perhaps utilizing parts of the Haul Road that
have not been destroyed by natural processes.
Perhaps because I've never used the Haul Road for recreation, I think the
section from Ward Ave. south to Fort Bragg should be sufficient for those
who want to walk, bike, ride, etc. on a trail (or road) along the
beach/dunes. The northern section should be returned to as natural a state
as possible. (That's what a "nature preserve" is; ie, more emphasis on
environmental values, less on access.) The northern section would, of
course, remain open to those who wish to walk along the beach in that area.
It would not, however, be conducive to equestrians, cyclists, wheelchairs,
or people who have difficulty walking in sand.
I also don't want to see three-quarters of million dollars returned to the
state when it could be used to clean up a lot of toxic material from the Ten
Mile Dunes and restore it to as close to pristine as possible. Of course,
it's also quite possible that after the BOS acts (whatever the ultimate
vote), there will be an appeal to the Coastal Commission. I can't imagine
that body not siding with State Parks on this one, but then again, I've been
wrong before.
