Ed O: I just emailed geologist Jim Berklund about whether the use of onshore and offshore fracking was imminent in Mendocino County. He gave me this answer:

 Ed <elained at mcn.org>
Ed,
Thanks for your note. I really appreciated the reception in Fort Bragg. There is little possibility of frack-worthy shale onshore in your area, but off-shore there may be possibilities. I do know about the lower Miocene Skooner Gulch formation in a narrow strip south of Galloway Gulch. It rests on the Iverson Basalt, which would be regarded as "Basement," without oil.

At Petrolia, to the north of Fort Bragg, the first oil known in California, was quickly played out before the Civil War.
I hope you saw the article by Guy Kovner in the PRESS DEMOCRAT (2/12/2013)> He talked of extending the no-drilling protection "..from Bodega Bay more than 60 miles north to Point Arena...."

***Unfortunately they set up and got the MLPA passed just in time for fracking off the coast. As we knew all along the MLPA doesn't protect the "marine protected areas" from oil and/or gas drilling in the ocean. Catharine Reheis-Boyd, who did her work well getting the MLPA passed in Southern and Northern California, is out promoting fracking as safe. See http://www.vcreporter.com/cms/story/detail/fracking_offshore/10432/ for a report on a spill that has already happened in Ventura County.
