Updated: Stewart contends DesJarlais can't be trusted

MURFREESBORO — Democratic Congressional candidate Eric Stewart suggested Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais is a pro-life hypocrite during a 2:30 p.m. press conference today.

Stewart responded after The Huffington Post reported earlier today it had a phone recording made by DesJarlais in 2000 that back up accusations that DesJarlais, a medical doctor, pressured a mistress who was one of his patients to get an abortion.

“The news we got today is about hypocrisy,” said Stewart, a Democrat state senator from Franklin county.

DesJarlais Communications Director Robert Jameson did not deny the report, but contends the accusations are repeated attacks that came out in the previous election year in 2010.

“This is old news from the last election cycle that Tennesseans have already widely rejected,” Jameson said in an email statement. “Desperate personal attacks do not solve our nation’s problems, yet it appears that there are those who choose to continue to engage in the same gutter politics that were characterized by national media as the nastiest in the nation just two years ago. Since the congressman’s opponents cannot attack him on his independent, conservative and pro-life record in Congress, they have once again resorted to pure character assassination.”

Stewart during his press conference repeated the accusations from The Huffington Post that paint DesJarlais as a pro-life and pro-family values hypocrite in Congress who in the past committed adultery four times, in addition to seeking an abortion for a mistress who was a patient.

“This disqualifies the congressman from representing this district,” said Stewart, a Democratic state senator from Franklin County. “It’s disgusting. It’s not our values.”

Stewart said the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision is the law of the land and that each woman should make decisions about abortions while consulting with her family.“We need to do everything we can to reduce abortions,” Stewart said.

Stewart read the following statement during the press conference:

“As most of you know, stories have broken today that cause most anyone to question whether Congressman Scott DesJarlais is worthy of public office.

“Congressman Scott DesJarlais has consistently presented himself as a pro-life, pro-family-values person. He’s told the people of Tennessee this. He’s told the country this, and he’s told his supporters this.

“And today we all learned that a news story broke that showed the Congressman admitted to having four affairs. In addition to being a representative of the people as a U.S. Congressman, DesJarlais is also a medical doctor. The story today also revealed that he had an affair with one of h is own patients and then urged and pleaded with her to terminate the pregnancy.

“In the story that broke today, we also learned that Congressman DesJarlais doesn’t deny any of this. Congressman DesJarlais took an oath to be faithful in marriage and broke that oath at least four times. Congressman DesJarlais took an oath as a physician to ‘do no harm’ and broke that oath. Congressman DesJarlais has broken faith with the people of the 4th District.

“And on top of this, he has continued to hold himself out to the public as someone who is pro-life and pro-family, and today doesn’t deny that as a medical doctor he had an affair with a patient, got that patient pregnant and then begged and pleaded with her to terminate the pregnancy.

“Scott DesJarlais has proven over and over again that he cannot be trusted, and this latest revelation is absolutely disqualifying.”
