OCCUPYers ––
The Redwood Coast Senior Center [RCSC] Board holds a workshop this Saturday, but it is unlikely they will consider Occupy use of their facilities at that time because the workshop topic is budget. Center Director Charles Bush, does hope to set up a session with some Board members, possibly on Monday. It is possible that such consultation can resolve the issue in advance of the next RCSC Board meeting.
It was an error on my part, at Saturday's General Assembly, to bring up the Brown Act; I've been reminded that it applies only to publicly-elected officials and as such is not applicable to non- governmental organizations [NGOs]. However, since the Board's resolutions did not specifically reference Occupy, and since there is a specific policy that use of facilities does not signify RCSC endorsement, it's quite possible that the refusal to permit Occupy to use Center space will be seen as a misinterpretation.
This situation, however, does give Occupy an opportunity to further one of its prime objectives: increase participation in community affairs. It would be salutary if a number of Occupy folks can attend the next Board meeting at 1 pm next Saturday at the Center. That would signal the Board that they have a constituency to which they are accountable –– community citizens who are interested in the good work the Center is doing and wish to participate in decision-making discussions.
