> Grassroots call for international protest against Japanese Prime Minister Noda's decision to re-start Ohi atomic reactors
>
> The Japanese grassroots anti-nuclear movement (Citizens’ Nuclear Information Center, FoE Japan, Green Action, No Nukes Asia Forum, Peace Boat, and Shut Tomari) has called upon international allies to rally at Japanese embassies/consulates, and/or send messages of protest to Japanese Prime Minister Noda, for his decision to re-start the first of 50 idled atomic reactors, beginning at Ohi nuclear plant in Fukui Prefecture. Noda has not learned the lessons of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear catastrophe, so powerfully communicated by women survivors from Fukushima Prefecture. The latest news is that the approval decisions, and the actual re-start of the reactors at Ohi, could very well happen in the next few days. The call to action requests supporters: to assemble in front of Japanese embassies/consulates; to submit a letter of protest addressed to Prime Minister Noda, via the Japanese Ambassador in your country; to seek media coverage of your actions; and to report back to Japanese organizers so they can reinforce your message to the Japanese government. Beyond Nuclear will join with NIRS -- and representatives of other environmental groups -- as it delivers a petition to the Japanese Embassy in Washington, D.C. on Monday, June 18th, 12 noon. More

> Help prevent "Solyndra on Steroids" -- urge Obama & Chu to cancel Vogtle nuclear loan guarantees!
>
> The trade publication SNL has reported that DOE has extended the conditional nuclear loan guarantee of $8.3 billion for two proposed new Toshiba-Westinghouse AP-1000 reactors at Vogtle, Georgia until the end of the year. Project proponent Southern Co. is in a tug of war with the White House Office of Management and Budget over how much "skin in the game" it will have to risk, while federal taxpayers could be left holding the bag for 15 times the amount of money lost in the Solyndra solar loan guarantee scandal. Now is the time to contact the White House and Energy Department and urge President Obama and Secretary Chu to cancel the Vogtle 3 & 4 nuclear loan guarantees! More.

> Re: Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4, what is the U.S. government waiting for?
>
> Japanese diplomat Akio Matsumura has spearheaded warning the world about the risks of globally catastrophic radioactivity releases if Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4's high-level radioactive waste storage pool catches fire. In a new essay, he asks "what is the U.S. government waiting for?", and urges international cooperation to empty the pool before another powerful earthquake collapses Unit 4. Please urge President Obama to offer U.S. assistance to Japan in order to carry out an independent assessment, as Tokyo Electric Power Company continues to inappropriately downplay the risks. More.

> U.S. Court of Appeals has no confidence in NRC's "Nuclear Waste Con Game"
>
> Last Friday, in a major environmental victory, a U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit panel unanimously ruled against the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) "Nuclear Waste Confidence Decision." Plaintiffs, including the States of CT, NJ, NY, and VT -- as well as an environmental coalition comprised of BREDL, NRDC, Riverkeeper, and SACE, represented by NRDC's Geoff Fettus and Diane Curran of the law firm Harmon, Curran, Speilberg + Eisenberg, LLP -- successfully argued that NRC's environmental assessment of the safety and security risks of on-site storage of high-level radioactive waste at atomic reactors has been woefully inadequate for decades. Proposed new reactor licenses, and old reactor license extensions, could now face major delays, as NRC is forced, under court order, to carry out the long overdue environmental review. However, anti-nuclear watchdogs must re-double their vigilance, as the nuclear establishment is already twisting this court victory into a call for "centralized interim storage" parking lot dumps, which would rush "Mobile Chernobyl" high-level radioactive waste shipments onto the roads, rails, and waterways. The Senate Energy and Water Appropriations bill (S. 2465), sponsored by U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and already passed by the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, would fund "pilot programs" in centralized interim storage, and must be stopped. Help block it by contacting your U.S. Senators, as well as Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV). More.
