NEW 3D-PRINTING METHOD FOR METALS
A team of Northwestern researchers has created a new way to print
three-dimensional metallic objects using rust and metal powders.
While current 3D-manufacturing methods rely on vast metal powder beds
and expensive lasers or electron beams, Northwestern's new technique
uses liquid inks and common furnaces, resulting in a cheaper, faster,
and more uniform process.
The new technology could be used for printing batteries, solid-oxide
fuel cells, medical implants, and mechanical parts for larger
structures, such as rockets and airplanes.

World's First Locking Rewireable C13 IEC Connector
<http://ims8.lyris.net/t/7685208/337887935/1963273/0/>
Designed to guard against accidental disconnection of computers, PDU's
servers and most network devices, the locking C13 connector is a
straightforward high-visibility locking mechanism combined with a simple
release, which allows for disconnection from all sides. Ideal as a
retrofit solution, it requires no other equipment or special inlets to
secure it. Simply plug it into an appliance as you would a standard C13.

TECH BRIEFS TV: HAND EXOSKELETON FEATURES 16 SENSORS
Engineers from the ReNeu Robotics Lab at the University of Texas at
Austin have developed a 3D-printed, cable-driven force-control hand
exoskeleton. Created for rehabilitation and teleoperation, the device
consists of thumb, index, and middle finger mechanisms.

MEET NASA'S PLANETARY PROTECTION OFFICER
As NASA plans launches to Mars, Europa, and beyond, the agency's Office
of Planetary Protection ensures that the explored environments are
shielded against contamination. In this month's "Who's Who at NASA" Q&A,
Dr. Catherine Conley explains how Earth biohazards can impact NASA
missions.

New NASA-developed multipliers can be used in millimeter-wave radars or
radiometers. In addition to providing efficient spatial mapping of a
planet's atmosphere composition and wind velocities, the advanced
multipliers also offer national security applications, such as standoff
personnel screening or perimeter intrusion.

Inspection of the International Space Station and other manmade objects
in space is difficult because of the microgravity environment. New
inchworm-like robots, developed at Jet Propulsion Laboratory, use gecko
adhesive pads to stick to surfaces.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK
Our previous Question of the Week focused on an effort to test the
effectiveness of Oculus Rift headsets on users' mood and stress levels.
We asked you if virtual reality technology could be used to help
astronauts. Eighty-five percent of INSIDER readers said yes, while 15
percent voted no. What do you think? Start a conversation
<http://ims8.lyris.net/t/7685208/337887935/1963290/0/>.
This week's Question: Researchers at the NASA Glenn Research Center
<http://ims8.lyris.net/t/7685208/337887935/1963291/0/> are developing a
hybrid plane that will, like a hybrid car, rely on both fossil fuels and
electricity to power itself. The NASA engineers are looking at power
systems that generate electricity in place of, or in addition to, thrust
at the turbine engine, and then convert that electricity into thrust
using fans at other places on the aircraft. The Glenn team says the
advances could make flying up to 30 percent more fuel efficient.
What do you think? Would you prefer to fly in a hybrid aircraft?
