<div dir="ltr"><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">John and Scott,</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">Remember who hired John Coate out of 50-60 candidates. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">The Board selected John Coate who had no non-profit experience, no supervisory skills of staff, no radio fund raising or GM experience, no budget experience, no experience as a non-profit Board member who could work with the KZYX Board, and who seemingly has mental health issues calling himself a "mystic nomad." In what business entity could a mystic nomad be hired or manage a day-to-day business and budget? </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">We all see what hiring Mr Coate has done the station.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">John, if I remember correctly, you said Mr Coate just isolated and shunned you when you rightfully began to inquire into the finances ( you were the Board Treasurer.) The then Board of Directors did not support your inquiry, nor welcome an accounting of the finances that all could see and understand. Further, Stuart Campbell, the self-appointed interim president, permitted programmers like Jeff Blankfort, staff member, David Steffan, and others to excoriate you at the 2015 Annual meeting of KZYX. Stuart used those people by proxy to shame, discredit and attempt to have you quit. John Coate sat there and watched it happen. This abuse went on for about 30 minutes. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">I confronted Stuart Campbell via email about these actions. He did not answer my email. He seems to have the same habits as John Coate: isolate and block out anyone who doesn't make him, Stuart look good. Stuart's behavior does anything but make him appear as ethical.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">In the Annual Meeting, who came to your aid? The other Board members? Staff? Programmers? None. Stuart, as Chair and President, did what many, if not all narcissists do: They enlist the help of those around them (by proxy) to do what they want to keep their hands clean of. In other words, Stuart and the Board let a fellow Board member be verbally abused for trying to get answers about the budget. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">If the station doesn't soon fall into bankruptcy which will leave the license available to begin again, the current Board should rid itself of any of the old guard, programmers and board alike. This would mean an accurate disclosure of all past impropriety and a path to correct it. The station is at a crossroads now. <br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">Any current board member with a conscience, should remove him or herself to that end. This is especially true for Mr Campbell.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">On the eve of the Summer Fund Drive, I urge all current members and potential members to carefully examine what has been revealed in the last 3-6 months. If something is unclear, ask questions in the next board meeting. Call the station and get the principle board members on the phone to answer your questions.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">Ask Jeff Blankfort questions. Why did he do what he did at the 2015 Annual Meeting? BTW, he still has his show which no other station would air due to his bias and content of this show. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">Ask the same question of David Steffan who is still working at the station. When does a staff person in a public annual meeting stand up and scream at a sitting board member? Never heard of it. It just doesn't happen.</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">Thank you. </div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small">Mary Massey, KZYX Member</div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div><div class="gmail_default" style="font-size:small"><br></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Thu, Jun 23, 2016 at 9:14 AM, <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:sako4@comcast.net" target="_blank">sako4@comcast.net</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex"><div><div style="font-family:Arial;font-size:12pt;color:#000000"><div>Excellent letter, Scott. </div><div><br></div><div>John Coate excelled at two things -- self-promotion and myth-making.</div><div><br></div><hr><div style="color:#000;font-weight:normal;font-style:normal;text-decoration:none;font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:12pt"><b>From: </b>"Scott Peterson" <<a href="mailto:scottmartinpeterson@hotmail.com" target="_blank">scottmartinpeterson@hotmail.com</a>><br><b>To: </b>"kzyxtalk" <<a href="mailto:kzyxtalk@lists.mcn.org" target="_blank">kzyxtalk@lists.mcn.org</a>>, <a href="mailto:gblack@mcn.org" target="_blank">gblack@mcn.org</a><br><b>Sent: </b>Thursday, June 23, 2016 2:30:00 AM<br><b>Subject: </b>[Kzyxtalk] John Coate didn't save MCPB<br><div><br></div>
<div dir="ltr"><div>Gordon Black, <span style="font-size:12pt">Volunteer Programmer, MCPB -- gblack (at) <a href="http://mcn.org" target="_blank">mcn.org</a></span></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>Dear Mr. Black,<div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Count me among your fans. I've enjoyed your radio show on KZYX for a </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>long <span style="font-size:12pt">time. I understand that you're a fan of John Coate. As evidenced by</span></div><div><span style="font-size:12pt"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size:12pt"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size:12pt">the statement: "Coate merely saved MCPB." And published here:</span></div><div><span style="font-size:12pt"><br></span></div><div><span style="font-size:12pt"><br></span></div><div><a href="http://theava.com/archives/44886#2" target="_blank">http://theava.com/archives/44886#2</a></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I'm sure that you wrote that with all sincerity. Many people -- particularly</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>KZYX programmers -- have done the same. But there's something you</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>should see. The Form 990s that Mr. Coate filed here:</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://nccsweb.urban.org/communityplatform/nccs/organization/profile/id/680050440/popup/1" target="_blank">http://nccsweb.urban.org/communityplatform/nccs/organization/profile/id/680050440/popup/1</a></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>And the audit he left here:</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><a href="http://kzyx.org/Board/audits/MCPB-Audit-Report6-30-15.pdf" target="_blank">http://kzyx.org/Board/audits/MCPB-Audit-Report6-30-15.pdf</a></div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>If you study these records, you'll see that John Coate didn't save MCPB.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Quite the opposite happened. During his tenure, MCPB's net assets</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>dropped by seventy-five percent. While it's debt nearly doubled. Don't</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>feel bad for your statement. Lots of people made the same statement.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>But that statement had one source -- John Coate. It was very difficult to </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>confirm. Because Mr. Coate was hiding Form 990s. With a policy written</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>on the Form 990s themselves: "No review was or will be conducted."</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I asked Mr. Coate about that recently. Along with the reasoning for that</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>policy. He wouldn't tell me. Maybe he'll tell you. You can reach him at </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>tex (at) <a href="http://well.com" target="_blank">well.com</a>.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>The only reason I can think of is misdirecting good people like you. Into</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>believing that he'd saved MCPB. When he'd done the exact opposite.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>The current forecast for MCPB isn't very promising. According to recent</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>figures, MCPB's net assets are down to three percent of what they were</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>before Mr. Coate arrived. And that MCPB will be bankrupt in a matter of</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>months.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>You're a thinking man, Mr. Black. That's evident in the statement you</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>published. But I implore you. Please study MCPB's Form 990s. And its</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>latest audit. Then reconsider your statement. And consider publishing a</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>retraction. To enlighten your fellow MCPB programmers. </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Sincerely,</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Scott M.
