Radioactive wasps. Relax, the nearby nuclear plant is sure that nothing 
has leaked recently. It must've leaked somewhere a long time ago, so 
it's fine. In the real world, nearly everything is naturally radioactive 
to some extent, and plants and animals can concentrate it. Bananas, for 
example, and Brazil nuts. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that wasps do 
it, nor that they get some of their calories in winter and/or pissy 
attitude from fizzing nuclear decay. They're wasps.
