"Heroes and Patriots" returns to KMUD on Thursday, September 30, at 9 am, Pacific Time. Our guests are two of America's most widely admired women, Coleen Rowley and Cynthia McKinney. Our cohosts are John Sakowicz and Mary Massey.

COLEEN ROWLEY

Rowley, a former FBI special agent and division counsel whose May 2002 memo to the FBI Director exposed some of the FBI’s pre-9/11 failures — was named one of TIME magazine’s “Persons of the Year” in 2002.

Rowley wrote to the FBI Director again in February 2003 with some hard questions about the reliability of the evidence being adduced to “justify” the impending invasion of Iraq.

Rowley now warns of terror attacks being used as pretexts for official agendas. She also warns that bulk collection of personal data by government, like military interventions, is not only counter to liberty, but counterproductive to the alleged goal of stopping attacks.


CYNTHIA MCKINNEY

McKinney served six terms in the U. S. House of Representatives. She was the first Black woman elected to represent Georgia in the House. She left the Democratic Party and ran in 2008 as the presidential candidate of the Green Party of the United States. McKinney gained national attention for remarks she made following the September 11 attacks in 2001. She asserted that the United States had "numerous warnings of the events to come" and called for an investigation.

While in Congress, McKinney was also an advocate for victims of Hurricane Katrina and a critic of the government's response.

On November 18, 2005, McKinney was one of only three House members to vote for H.R. 571, introduced by House Armed Services Committee chairman Duncan Hunter, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, on which McKinney sat. Hunter, a Republican, offered this resolution calling for an immediate withdrawal of U.S. forces in Iraq in place of John Murtha's H.J.Res. 73, which called for redeployment "at the earliest possible date."

At the end of the 2006 legislative session, McKinney introduced articles of impeachment against President George W. Bush as (H Res 1106).

Concerning the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., McKinney submitted to Congress two different versions of the same bill, the "MLK Records Act" (one in 2003, the other in 2005), which, if signed into law, would release all currently sealed files. These records were sealed in 1978 and are not due to be declassified until the year 2028. 

McKinney is a leader in the Free Gaza Movement and she has sailed on the ship, "Spirit of Humanity" during the Israeli blockade of Gaza.

JOHN SAKOWICZ

Hired by A.B. "Buzzy" Krongard in 1979 at Alex Brown & Sons, Sakowicz, like Krongard, had twin careers on Wall Street and in the national security community. His expertise is in financial intelligence, and financial crimes enforcement, especially anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing. 

MARY MASSEY

Massey has worked for public radio and has been co-hosting "Heroes and Patriots" since 2017. She has special expertise in post-show production, distribution, and syndication.
