Marco here. Thanks, Tim, it's always nice to be appreciated. But at some
point it might be helpful if you'd get up on your hind legs and speak up
for yourself against the corrupt regime of Mendocino County Broadcasting
Corporation that's forever bleeding KZYX dry, paying the so-called
manager and his gang lieutenants in the office literally hundreds of
thousands of dollars a year, enough to fully fund ten radio stations,
and paying you /and all the other local programmers/ nothing at all for
your radio work, such as it is, nor paying you for dutifully and
servilely begging listeners on the air for ever more money on behalf of
your shady corporate masters, and for barking like a metronome whenever
anyone who doesn't smell right gets near your junkyard fence.

Tim, I think you should consider getting together with the other
airpeople and demanding to be paid, unless you really think radio work
is not work at all, in which case, consider how much tax-derived money
MCPB Corp pays out to radio people thousands of miles away because those
radio people are man enough (and woman enough) to demand to be paid. For
their work. Are just Ira Glass and the two producers of his
one-hour-a-week show really worth $500,000 a year more than all the
airpeople at KZYX and all other similarly operated run-of-the-mill,
mediocre NPR satellite stations, who assemble your shows and show up and
perform them, all year long, all put together? Is just Amy Goodman worth
however much more she's paid than all of you put together? Is KZYX'
Jeffrey Parker, whose knowledge of and appreciation for real radio work
would be invisible in any light, worth being paid $60,000 more a year
/than all of you local airpeople at KZYX/ who are doing all the work
that delivers that money directly to his pants pocket while getting
nothing for yourself but the opportunity to once a week sit near a
microphone that belongs to someone else and be careful never to open
your heart? If you really think all your work is worthless, then how
much is Jeffrey Parker's brand of work worth; he's not doing radio at
all. Like every manager of KZYX ever, he's just harrumphing and
glad-handing and conspiring for the rancid status quo and snarfing up
all the loot /your/ work brings in. Wait, no, that's not right: Lorraine
Dechter tried to do two or three right things, and look at how long she
lasted as manager after the honeymoon period: five months.

Jeffrey has a program manager to direct the few programs that cry out
for direction. He has a bookkeeper to keep the books. He has a business
underwriting coordinator to coordinate the business underwriting. He has
an operations manager to manage the operations. And when something
breaks that he's not competent to fix, which includes every fucking
thing in the building except maybe to wiggle the toilet handle, there's
a real engineer a phone call away to come and fix it. Why does the radio
station need Jeffrey Parker on the register at all except to look
official for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting paperwork? He's
never designed and built a radio transmitter, a mixing board or any
other electronic equipment, he's never done sound reinforcement for a
band, he's never operated any kind of a truly public access system
either in publishing or broadcasting, he's never written and staged live
radio drama nor attempted to do anything creative on the radio. He's
entirely useless at attracting citizen newspeople to do news, and his
experience as a reporter was the main attraction of his resume. /Eight
months after they hired him to run the radio station/ he finally arsed
himself to sit at the mixing board and shakily host a call-in show for
the first time, you know, to get a little experience in the field. Tim,
even you are worth more to the radio station than Jeffrey Parker. Cut
him back to minimum wage and demand to be paid more than he is paid.
Come on, you must be worth minimum wage, Tim. Even a /mentally retarded/
person is worth the respect of being compensated for showing up and
punching in and doing the work. That's why they call it /the minimum wage/.

Speaking of which, there's a good idea for a show. KZYX has a token
funky black guy music show and a token Mexican music show and a token
women's show and a token weed show and a token atmospheric woo-wah space
music show and a token Grateful Dead show and a token broken mumbling
Vietnam vet show and a token harmless goofy humor show-- and there's a
time and a place for all of that, though two hours straight of Grateful
Dead is just nuts. But where's the show run by a token happy giggly
retarded kid who sounds like Homestar Runner? I would set an alarm to
listen to that.

Of course it's sheer optimism on my part that you'd read down this far,
"Radio God" Tim. I know you've never been much of a reader. I'll be in
Fort Bragg for my KNYO and KMEC show this Friday night after 9pm. Why
don't you call me and we can talk about all this stuff on the air until
your attention span runs out? It's 707 962-3022. If you'll be swearing
like a sailor, please wait till after 10pm to call, because otherwise it
agitates the weasels.
