Mary Pat Palmer shamelessly promotes and markets herself, and other natural health practitioners, on her show. It's free advertising, and she admits it. KZYX has no guidelines for this sort of thing. In a well-managed public radio station, this sort of thing is called "self-dealing".

Dear Mary Pat,
I just saw your email posted on the local listserv.
Thanks for the good points you've raised. I'd like to raise one with you now. You say 'This radio show exposes me and my name to a far greater number of people than any other means I can achieve without buying advertisements."
That's not the intent of a nonprofit, Mary Pat. I, for one, resent the hell out of so-called volunteers using a public charity to get free advertising. And then taking the moral high ground with those who don't.
Also, consider this. There's a considerable amount of time and money that people put into trying to help KZYX stay on its feet, and then get slapped down for it. Or ignored. I spent $157 on a flip chart presentation for the last KZYX board meeting. Presenting information that -- under KZYX policy -- paid staff was supposed to have done. But never has. I collected a whole $13 for that, leaving me $144 in the hole. One board member -- Jane Futcher -- thanked me for that, Mary Pat. And then asked if I could email it to her along with my research. WTF???
Fortunately for me, other volunteers were on the scene. Terry Vaughn and Derrick Hoyle from Mendocino TV. Doing video and sound of the entire meeting as volunteers, so the meeting could be broadcast to the public. But apparently Ms. Futcher didn't notice them. Or she wouldn't have asked for me to email my flip chart presentation to her. You can see that video here:

Meg Courtney -- who you seem to respect -- held the gavel for that meeting. But didn't say a word. Nor did she contribute any of the thirteen bucks I took home with me. Treasurer Stuart Campbell -- who was supposed to have presented the information I did -- had the nerve to dismiss it.
You say that 'I don't simply count the beans.' Maybe you should, Mary Pat. Maybe you should.
Sincerely,
Scott M. Peterson
Mendocino

medicine which I consider extremely important.
>This radio show exposes me and my name to a far greater number of

>We who have shows are not stupid Marco, however much you might like to
insinuate that. I do not begrudge the payments to the hardworking staff.
I wish everyone everywhere received $60,000/year. I see how hard the
staff work, and, particularly after the several months preceding Diane &
Rich's returns, what a very good job they do, and I know how hard we all
work - I don't simply count the beans.
>It is not about "no money to pay the airpeople", it is happiness that
the staff are paid for their hard work. Nothing REQUIRES us, as
airpeople, to raise money on air for the management. It is voluntary.
All public radio stations do this. No, I am not a "little person". I am
someone who uses my intelligence to promulgate issues I deem important
and raise money, in the time honored way, for a public radio station of
which I am a part. Although the concept seems to escape you, I consider
myself part of a team and am regarded as such. I certainly don't feel I
have "bosses" there. What I do have is people working hard to do tasks
that I don't want to do.
>I have opinions that sometimes counter those of the staff. I simply
voice them. I certainly agree with Meg Courtney. I don't feel I "beg"
for money for KZYX - I ask people to honor the station if they listen. I
do beg that no one votes for Sakowitz.
