WHEN TRUMP WON
In the night atlas of faraway places,
I wanted to be just a simple star.
Just a simple star.
I wanted to be a simple star
among 100 billion stars
in the Milky Way
high above Pikes Peak.
Was that too much to ask?
Standing there at 14,114 feet
at the Summit House
on Pikes Peak at sunset,
I had come to smoke a joint
and to illegally camp for the night.
But I changed my mind.
I changed my mind after hiking
the 19 steep miles
up the Pikes Peak Highway.
In desolate parking lots,
in parked cars,
and at roadside picnic tables,
people wept.
At the Pikes Peak tollgate,
they wept.
At Crystal Creek Reservoir,
they wept.
They wept at Glen Cove.
They wept at the picnic grounds
near Crowe Gulch.
Up I hiked, listening to the people weep.
At the Elk Park pullout.
At edge of the Bottomless Pit.
At edge of the Abyss of Desolation.
They wept at the observation deck
of Pike Peak's Summit House.
The people especially wept.
at the America the Beautiful monument.
They laid their heads against the granite
and called out
to Katharine Lee Bates.
"O beautiful for patriot dream
That sees beyond the years
Thine alabaster cities gleam
Undimmed by human tears!
America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
>From sea to shining sea!"
"Undimmed by tears?" they asked.
"We are extinguished by our tears."
No words can describe it.
Sorrowful wails issued
from darkened apartments below
in cities all across the United States
...all the way here
to the top of Pikes Peak.
The weeping went on and on,
and it did not stop..
The whole country was weeping.
Why?
Because America had died.
The Republic had died.
Sorrow was everywhere.
There was nothing to be done.
There was nothing to be done,
except one thing --
to work on our crash landings.
