Dear family and friends,

I recommend this interview with Chris Hedges (not to be confused with Christopher Hitchens) which covers the nine books he's written in the last 10 years.

It's on youtube, C-SPAN. It's long (2 hours) but a fine interview. Hope you like it. Of the current public intellectuals (Chomsky, Nader, Berry and others) I respect Hedges for the breadth of his experience - twenty years as a war/foreign correspondent, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School---and his integrity. He, like Wendell Berry speaks of the beatitudes and expresses a spiritual view that has taken me beyond the anti-Christian beliefs of the situaitonists. And Hedges' experience in Sarajevo is a must hear for those of us who want to understand the role of violence and nonviolence in real life. He is not a pacifist but a firm believer in the power of nonviolence.

Hedges is radical to the core. In the end we revolt---not because we have a plan or because we think we have a chance. We revolt because it is the only moral alternative: there's no place else to go.

I'll listen to this interview two or three times and follow down on the individuals (like George Cox and IF Stone) that he mentions, which are the roots of history and critical theory. That's the way I accommodate my limitations as a scholar, by finding the roots and not bothering so much with the rest.
