Subject: [Kzyxtalk] Consider This
Dear Mr. Campbell,
I found MCPB's budget online last week. One week before MCPB's
Board of Directors had voted on it. You can see it here:
http://www.kzyx.org/index.php/about-us/volunteering-at-kzyx/102-station-business/249-mcpb-2016-budget-as-passed
As you can see, it's marked 'As Approved 6-29-16'. Which is
hard to imagine. Since it hadn't voted on yet.
The amount that was 'passed' is $541,500. MCPB only took in
$501,695 last year. And spent $568,912 doing so. Running its
net assets down to the $10,000 mark. Meaning that MCPB lost
($65,000) last year.
This budget can't be found on the KZYX website. it can only
be found through Google. And there's no attribution. So it's
impossible to tell who proposed it. Or who 'approved' it.
I understand that you're MCPB's treasurer: http://www.kzyx.org
Have you ever heard of a cash flow statement? If you have
an Internet connection, you might want to look it up. You
can even find a calculator for it here:
http://www.bplans.com/business_calculators/cash_flow_calculator/
Having a current cash flow statement can keep unpleasant
surprises from happening. Like suddenly running out of
cash. And being forced into bankruptcy.
I've seen that you teach classes on critical thinking:
http://profiles.santarosa.edu/stuart-campbell
So maybe you can help me and other members of the public
to understand three critical thinking questions:
1. How can a nonprofit treasurer be effective _without_
a cash flow statement?
2. Without a cash flow statement, what's the point of
a budget?
3. How can a nonprofit budget be approved a week before
it's voted on?
Sincerely,
Scott M. Peterson
