As someone who has closely followed the KPFA situation, I can tell you
that Amy Goodman has nothing whatsoever to do with the problems at KPFA
and Pacifica.
What's going on, is that there are two factions at KPFA, and the
struggle between them is also reflected in a broader form in the
leadership struggles at Pacifica nationally.
1) The so called 'Save KPFA' faction is seeking to marginalize the
decision making power of the non-paid staff (the latter which does 80%
of the work at the station) and leverage to make themselves (the paid
staff) the sole decision makers on programming, logistics, etc. This
faction seeks to make Pacifica more like NPR in style. Save KPFA is also
more pro Democrat and has made moves to block Green reporters at KPFA
from interviewing Green Party members. At KPFA, Greens have had a big
problem getting air time because of such dynamics under the control of
this so called 'Save KPFA' faction, which is now in control of the
station Board by a slim margin. It is also this faction which has gotten
the station in all sorts of financial and legal trouble and which hired
a high powered Republican lawyer to go after staff who were trying to
protect a more democratic process at the station. (KPFA is now in danger
of losing its CPB funding because of the poor management decisions of
this faction.)
2) The pro non-paid worker, pro local programming, and more pro Green
KPFA staff group is known as United for Community Radio, which is
engaged in some important legal work and activism to a) keep the paid
worker faction from grabbing all of the control, and b) keep the paid
worker faction from driving the station over a financial cliff. United
for Community Radio is our ally, and the San Francisco Green Party has
consistently supported them and their Board candidates. Their web site
is http://www.unitedforcommunityradio.org
