[Kzyxtalk] Public Radio, Community Radio

According to my research into this, public radio stations are essentially the typical NPR stations that you have heard around the country that have NPR programming and play classical music during between NPR productions.
Community radio stations produce a lot more of their own programming by opening up the airwaves to members of the community to produce their own programs.
In terms of management, Public radio stations typically hire a program director to oversee all programming choices while Community radio stations more often have a committee which determines the programs that will be produced at the station. This committee reviews applications by community members and allows for public input into the process.
KZYX is a very motley combination of the two. While the board has approved the committee method, staff seems to prefer the Public radio model.

KZYX could be considered both. The low-power stations would probably be considered community radio but not public radio, as they receive no public funding and are not subject to CPB regulations (though there is some underwriting). It's those regulations that "define" what public radio can and cannot be.

In much of the world, funding comes from the government, especially via annual fees charged on receivers. In the United States, public broadcasters may receive some funding from both federal and state sources, but generally most financial support comes from underwriting by foundations and businesses ranging from small shops to corporations, along with listener contributions via pledge drives. The great majority are operated as private not-for-profit corporations.[1]

Community stations serve geographic communities and communities of interest. They broadcast content that is popular and relevant to a local, specific audience but is often overlooked by commercial or mass-media broadcasters. Community radio stations are operated, owned, and influenced by the communities they serve. They are generally nonprofit and provide a mechanism for enabling individuals, groups, and communities to tell their own stories, to share experiences and, in a media-rich world, to become creators and contributors of media.
