What is a lover of community radio to do? Support the station so it stays on air, each according to her/his ability!
As Sheila Dawn eloquently points out, volunteering is a powerful way to do so. Hang in & work for change. Elect active, engaged Board members, establish communications with them, & insist on their accountability to the wishes of members. Burning down the house may be sexy, & serial down-&-dirty conflicts sell newspapers, but when our local on-air alternative to mainstream/corporate radio is gone, we can expect disconnection unto chaos.
I was a devoted fan of my erstwhile KMFB colleague Marco's Memo of the Air, & when I served on the PAC, urged that it be heard on KZYX in a late night slot. I hoped for an agreement. The escalation of discourtesies in communications saddens me.
Who & what kind of programming deserves airtime? I am still pondering. I would hope to hear the creativity, braininess, zaniness, wisdom, & diversity generated by & relevant to our lives in N CA.
I hope for some skillful means of balancing the authority that keeps the station on air day after day with the effective radiated power of listener/member input.
Naturally, change is gonna come.

Dear Liz and Ann,
I agree, of course, that the purpose is not to tear down what we have built together. Many care for our community radio station. But what about the way Marco McClean has been treated? This guy is one of the best on-air radio personalities in Northern California, and he can't even get a civil response from Mary.
Marco is not the only person who has been mistreated by the management of KZYX. There are many more. The mean-spirited atmosphere at the station, especially from the Program Director, is driving talented people away. It is killing the station.
What then are we lovers of community radio to do?

Marco McClean said to Stuart Campbell:
> Imagine you weren't on the board of directors, that you brought your show as a finished proven product to KZYX, and you waited and waited —waited for years— and when you asked what progress was being made to put your show on the schedule you got no answer at all. And when you wrote to the manager, he told you /he/ wasn't the program director. And when you asked, "What do I have to do to get my show on KZYX?" the manager said, "I guess you have to convince Mary." And when you stopped by the station to talk about it you were treated as though you were an unwanted intrusion and told to use the telephone next time. What would you do then?
