Dear Members of the KZYX Board:
I am writing this because I will be preparing for my Tuesday January 5
radio broadcast and thus will be unable to attend the Monday night Board
meeting in Ukiah.
The purpose of this letter is to respectfully request that you form a Board
committee to investigate the terminations
, in recent years.
of a very long list of KZYX programmers. It is because the list
of those terminated
is so long that I am making this request. In fact, more people have been
fired from KZYX during my almost 10 years with the station, than I have
witnessed being fired in my entire 65 year working career.
I hope
and trust
that in a small community, such as ours, differences between programmers
and management
can mostly
be cooperatively handled by sitting
,
talking
and sometimes mediating.
Unfortunately this has not been the case. To the contrary
,
there have been summary firings which have caused, disgrace, dishonor and
negative feelings towards the station
,
its paid employees
and the volunteer elected Board of Directors.
O
ver the years
I have called the station GM and offered to mediate a meeting between
management and a fired programmer. I was told "thanks but no thanks. I
won't talk to that
------------
."
As we all know the national journalist Brian Williams was caught falsifying
information. He was demoted but he did not lose his job or his career. At
KZYX I believe you will find that programmers have been fired for
infractions and in some case
s
we
may not
even know why they were fired.
Perhaps
many
programmers
could have been suspended instead of fired.
Johanna Shultz was told she was
summarily
fired because of language used by a hip hop singer during the 12-4AM safe
harbor period. Johanna was devastated.
Does anyone know why 16 year supervisor Norman
d
u
Vall was fired? It beggars the imagination to understand why Norm was fired
rather than talked with and negotiated with.
How are we to understand the firing of
a
volunteer
in his 70s who, whether you agree with hi
s politics
or not, has given so much of his life to our community?
There are many
additional
people on the list of those terminated. Els Cooperrider, KC Meadows,
Johanna Schultz, Kristina Armistead, Doug Mckenty, John Sakowicz,
and more.
It
is simply bad public relations for our station to have so many people in
the community who have been fired.
It was to be expected that in a community of activists some of those many
people fired would band together to take legal action in the pursuit of
some form of satisfaction, nihilistic though
they
may be. The amount of money
managerial failure
cost the station is most unfortunate and I believe it could have been
avoided via negotiation
/mediation
instead of
firing
.
Many firings in the workplace cause
some
workers to feel unsafe and
they
avoid speaking up for what they believe in
when
they think speaking out will get them fired.
With the new regime at KZYX we have an opportunity to heal the past and
start anew with a fresh slate.
Creating a Board committee to look into the firings and possibly invite
some of the fired programmers to return, would be a proper humanitarian
effort and would do a great deal for the public image of the station.
Thank you for taking the time to read my letter and consider my request.
I love our station and consider it a privilege to be allowed to
broadcast... especially considering some of my admitted eccentricities.
Wishing you each excellent health,
Richard
