Did you know that even today we can place Lewis and Clark’s camp 
latrines, because they prophylactically swallowed mercury for the 
syphilis they imagined they might catch by trading trinkets to Native 
American women in return for a little consideration of an explorin’ 
man’s needs? Also, Frida Lyngstad of Abba (/Funky Town/, /Fernando/, 
/Dancing Queen/, etc.) was among the issue of the Nazi lebensborn 
program. Further, NASA is about to wake up the Kuiper Belt mission robot 
to snap some pictures on its gravity-sling pass by Pluto, which is so 
far away that the radio signals sent by the robot, traveling at the 
speed of light, will take many hours to reach Earth. Meanwhile, an old 
grayish-whitish man in America’s Bible Belt, startled up out of his 
engrossment in Fox so-called News by a noise outside, shot a 
milk-coffee-colored college boy dead for turning around in the driveway, 
paid a $500 fine for it and –it doesn’t say exactly but I think he gets 
to keep his gun too. Are we an interesting species, or what? Furthermore 
allow me to call your attention to the prison breakout scene in this 
week’s (originally December third 1946's) Boston Blackie, where the 
prop-siren failed (!) and the sound effects operator, missing not a 
beat, used a slide-whistle (!!) instead, which you’ll hear warble from 
his own barely stifled laughter in relief that he’d thought to use it 
and then in shared amusement with the actors who were all simulating the 
prison break by shouting, stomping around and helpfully cranking the 
mechanical machine-gun machine because the sound effects man’s hands 
were occupied. Good times. Good times.
